JOURNEY

HOME

Doing up a house is an intense labour. The dream scenario is to appoint a marvellous

interior designer, explain clearly your hearts desire, move family plus dogs into a ne
hotel, and then return some six weeks later to a perfectly constructed and spotless
vision of your new and improved abode. Sadly in all my years of editing this magazine,
I have never encountered this. And I dont think thats just because ne hotels are
seldom keen to house large slobbery hounds. Rather, its an impossible ction. Most of

PICTURE: EMMA WEBSTER

Improving your home is one of the best journeys you can ever undertake
and can only, in the long run, have a positive effect on your wellbeing
us nd it difficult to articulate what we think we want/need, designers dont work via
telepathy and, unfortunately, being able to decamp en luxe for the duration of works
is the nancial preserve of the few. Not forgetting, those aforementioned works often
overrun due to myriad random factors. Personally, I nd the necessary intrusion the
hardest to bear. When your hitherto private retreat from the world is invaded by dust,
dirt, builders kit and too many people at once, it can swiftly become overwhelming.
The thing is, I absolutely maintain that the journey of improving your home is one
of the best things you can ever undertake. Shaping and colouring where you live to suit
your familial needs, temperament and taste can only, in the long run, have a positive
effect; I believe that the spaces we surround ourselves with on a daily basis have a huge
impact on our physical health and emotional wellbeing.
But to get there is not without its tests. Lets assume weve mood-boarded our way
to an agreed scheme; the responsibility then shifts to the builders, joiners or decorators.
Are they available, sufficiently detail oriented and/or dedicated to the task in hand?
What of the unexpected? The uncovered leak, crumbling plaster, rotten joists or hidden
wet rot? What too of, whisper it, changing your mind? That said, I insist that it is far
better to change your mind at a stage when something can be done than to stay silent
and harbour regret. Hopefully, with much mocked up at the mood board stage, huge
shifts of intention can be avoided, but I grant you, with things like colour, its sometimes
just too hard to really see what it feels like until its done.
Unfortunately, there is no golden set of rules to protect against all of this. Id advise
only the following: go in with your eyes open, be realistic about costs, accept change as
inevitable and, throughout the whole ordeal, stay mindful of your objective. An improved
home = a happier home. Itll be worth it in the end, it always is. After all, none of the
homes we have ever featured got to where they are now without going through this too.

Three things I learnt this month

If you receive bi-annual water bills, then

regularly check your water meter. When all
of your taps are off, the dial in the centre should
not move. If it does, you have a leak! To check
whether that leak is inside or outside your home,
isolate the stopcock. Dial still moving? The leak
is outside your property. Stopped? Its inside.
Either way, call your plumber/water company
to avoid being billed for the wasted water.
A cucamelon is a real thing. A cross between
a melon and a cucumber, it hails from
Mexico, looks like a teeny-tiny version of
a watermelon and tastes like a lemon-zesty
cucumber. Available at Waitrose.
Installing a Velux sun tunnel might not be
as easy as I originally thought. I will report
back next month.

Japanese ceramicist Akiko Hirai has teamed

they are made using the traditional kohiki
technique, where dark clay is dipped into
a white porcelain slip, and no two items are
the same. Each tea bowl comes with its own

into which a handwritten poem by Hirai
herself is tucked. There are also matching

DESIGN DETAILS: MOULDINGS

WORDS: ALEX KRISTAL PICTURE: BRUCE BUCK

Every month we bring you the full lowdown on the elements that dene
your home. This issue, how to nd the perfect ceiling plasterwork
Originally a purely functional architectural element used to mask imperfections where
a propertys walls meet the ceiling, the style of an architectural moulding would also
indicate the grandeur of a room: in Victorian houses, reception rooms would have
larger, more intricate cornicing than private spaces. On the ceiling, decorative reliefs
surrounding a light tting also had a practical purpose they were designed to catch
the smoke and soot that rose from gas lamps, in order to protect ceilings from damage.
In new book How to Decorate (Mitchell Beazley, 30), Farrow & Balls Joa Studholme
and Charlotte Cosby extoll the virtues of emphasising architectural mouldings with
paint, whether you choose to replicate existing plasterwork, restore a period feature
(as in Chelsea Townhouse New York, above, by Julian King; juliankingarchitect.com), or
make a contemporary statement by designing new details. Rather than painting your
cornicing to match the ceiling, try painting it the same colour as the walls it will make
the room feel loftier. Alternatively, paint mouldings in a contrasting subtle tone to the
walls, which will give a sense of character without conning the rooms proportions.

The brand that transformed the way we shop for

glass celebrates its 50th anniversary this year
Even if youve never heard of LSA International, its almost certain
that youll have seen and used its products. Its glassware and china
can be found in homeware departments and independent stores, as
well as restaurants and hotels, all over the world. Perhaps youre
more likely to remember its candy-coloured palette and striking
shapes than the brand name itself, but behind the array of tumblers,
Champagne utes and vases it produces is an interesting story.
It all started when founder Janusz Lubkowski and his wife Ewa
spotted some enamelware in the window of Habitat. It was 1966, and
Terence Conrans home store was a new and energising presence on
the high street. The Lubkowskis decided to show Conran some of
the brightly coloured enamelware made in their native Poland.

Conran placed an order, and with that the great British entrepreneur
had played his part in the creation of LSA International.

Lubkowskis began exploring other aspects of Polish craft: porcelain
tableware, leather satchels and holdalls, and rustic-modern timber
accessories. The most promising avenue, though, was glass the
material with which LSA International remains most associated
today. By experimenting with colour and form, and keeping its
wares affordable, the brand quickly became a favourite.
Janusz Lubkowskis daughter Monika Lubkowska-Jonas joined
the company in 1985 and has continued her fathers legacy as creative
director she creates more than 250 new designs each year. In 2016,
as LSA International celebrates its 50th anniversary, she has
launched a range of homewares (pictured top) focusing on ve
key materials in its history: enamel, wood, leather, ceramic and
glass. Almost all pieces are created at the LSA International
headquarters in Sunbury-on-Thames, but its glassware
is still handmade in Poland (lsa-international.com).

FIVE THINGS TO
KNOW ABOUT K E T TA L

CEO Manuel Alorda admits the

companys early years were

The pioneering Spanish rm that made outdoor

furniture as stylish as anything inside the home
The continuing trend for blurring the boundaries between
indoor and outdoor living has seen garden furniture undergo
a transformation graduating from simple, brightly-coloured
deckchairs to stylish upholstered seating. One company that has
helped spur on this progress is Barcelona-based Kettal, which
was founded in 1966 by company president Manuel Alorda.
Collaborating as it does today with such stellar designers as
Patricia Urquiola and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, its easy to
forget that Kettal, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year,
has been part of the al fresco furniture revolution from the beginning. On a visit to
Germany in the early 1960s, Alorda noticed that garden furniture was a national
obsession and spotted an opportunity to produce it on the same scale in Spain. After
initially importing German outdoor furniture, he produced Kettals rst design, the

aluminium frame, destined for beaches. It was in the 1990s that the company truly hit its
stride, thanks to its decision to team up with well-known designer Oscar Tusquets, who
produced its ornate Oscar chair (below, far right)

JEAN-LOUIS DENIOT
Who is he? An alumnus of the storied

school in Paris, Deniot wasted no time in
putting his training into practice. He set
up his own studio at the age of 25, within
months of graduating in 2000. Since then
he has applied his classic French touch to private homes and
hotels from Knightsbridge to New Delhi.
Whats his style? He tends to layer lush, natural materials in
soft colours, with accents of tarnished metal. His secret
recipe, he says, is following the example of classic 18thcentury French decorating, imbuing each space with a chic
yet homely atmosphere. The materials and nishes that
Deniot uses are always dened by the context and location of
their project, so that the interior corresponds directly to its
environment. The two private residential projects pictured
here are good contrasting examples of his work. Both feature
opulent metal accents and luxurious materials, but the
apartment on Rue de Lille in Paris (living room, right) has
a classical, muted Parisian palette of pale blues and delicate
plaster tones, while the graphic ooring of this New York
home (entrance hall, below) gives it a more modern feel.

What is he currently working on? The new Nolinski hotel in
Paris (bedroom, left). Opening this summer in the heart of the
1st arrondissement, it is an exciting project for Deniot as it
afforded him total creative freedom. Housed in a traditional sixstorey Haussmann-era building, the ve-star venue has an
intimate, members-club feel. Deniot has used classic materials,
including silver leaf, wood panelling and luxurious velvets. He is
also designing a series of apartments for The Glebe, a property
development in Londons Chelsea, located within the stately
grounds of a former Edwardian school.
He says I love projects that allow for maximum personal
expression and interpretation of each location. Every time it is
an entirely different, magical trip. deniot.com

LONDONS NEW LANDMARK

TAT E M O D E R N E X T E N S I O N

This angular addition to the capitals iconic

modern art museum opens this month. We nd
out more about Tate Moderns past and future
Designed by Swiss architecture rm Herzog & de Meuron,
the highly anticipated Tate Modern extension a brand new
10-storey geometric tower opens its doors this month. Back
in 1997 the practice, headed by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, won a competition
to turn the 1950s Bankside Power Station, a derelict industrial landmark on Londons
South Bank, into a new home for Tates contemporary art collection. Since its completion
in 2000, Tate Modern has become a cultural powerhouse, attracting ve million visitors
each year (more than double the number that it was originally designed for). By exhibiting
forward-thinking 21st-century artists such as Anish Kapoor (2002), Olafur Eliasson
(2003), Damien Hirst (2012) and Yayoi Kusama (2012), the gallery is now one of the worlds
favourite art museums. Since the Bankside project, Herzog & de Meuron has designed an
eclectic mix of buildings, ranging from the Tokyo Prada store (below right) in 2003 to the
Beijing National Stadium (below left) for the 2008 Olympic Games.
In 2013, the practice was brought on board by Tate Modern a second time to extend the
gallery and provide a space for its extensive international art collection. Named Switch
House in tribute to Banksides history as a power station, the extension will increase the
total size of the site by 60 per cent, reinterpreting the original power stations brickwork
into a unique pyramid-shaped tower over 300,000 bricks clad its concrete skeleton.
Long horizontal windows are cut into the faade, revealing spectacular views of the River
Thames as well showcasing the brickwork up close in each gallery space. The galleries,
bars and restaurant will be furnished with specially
selected pieces by British designer Jasper Morrison;
there will also be an exhibition of Morrisons work
to mark the occasion. Opens 17 June (tate.org.uk).

46 ELLEDECORATION.CO.UK JULY 2016

What were your thoughts when

you won the competition to
redesign Bankside Power Station
all those years ago? At the time
we didnt even realise the potential
of such a project. The gallery has
changed London, in terms of the
impact it has had on urban design
and the development of the South
Bank and Southwark areas
especially. Before we started the
project the area was relatively
unknown and unexplored.
How did you approach the
design for the extension? For
us, the new extension is a way
to establish a new possible model
for contemporary art museums,
integrating a mixture of learning,
display and social spaces. When
we converted the power station
originally, we dug out the Turbine
Hall in order to turn it into a huge
open area for social activities;
a space where art could be curated
in the way that Tate wanted.
An addition to an existing building
is always very difficult; some people
will like the new part better, others
will prefer the old part, some may
say the extension is not necessary.
We wanted to anticipate such
controversial views. Our aim was
to create a building that appears
to be unied. For example, the
brickwork was colour-matched with
the original 1950s power station and
the concrete oors, walls and stairs
link the old structure to the new.
What is the signicance of
architecture today? I hope that
every architect has a humanitarian
approach to design; if architecture
was just about form and pleasure
it would be an absurd world.
Architecture can also have a political
dimension it can reect the
economic and social conditions
of its time. Its a constant reminder
of how a city has evolved.

ARCHITECTURAL ICON THE CHEMOSPHERE HOUSE BY JOHN LAUTNER

It has been said that Californian architecture would not be the

same without the work of American architect John Lautner
(19111994), who designed some of the West Coasts most
futuristic homes. His projects include the
Arango Residence, with its meandering
walkways, and the circular concrete Elrod
House which made a memorable cameo in
the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are
Forever. However, the Malin Residence,
which is most commonly known as the
Chemosphere House, is perhaps the most
iconic home completed during his lifetime.
Described by many as an orbiting spaceship
or water tower, the octagonal ying saucer
design, which is supported by a single ninemetre-high concrete column, offers stunning
panoramic views of Los Angeles.
Completed in 1960, this private residence
was designed for Leonard Malin, a young
aerospace engineer who had a limited budget
of $30,000 to build his dream family home.
48 ELLEDECORATION.CO.UK JULY 2016

The enterprising Lautner took on the challenge, securing nancial

sponsorship from the Southern California Gas Company and
Chem Seal Corporation by committing to use a resin coating
called Chem Seal in his design: this led to
the houses famous Chemosphere nickname.
The single-oor interior consists of two
sections, divided by an exposed-brick wall
and replace (left). On one side of the replace
are the open-plan kitchen, living area and
dining room, while the other side holds the
bedrooms, bathrooms and study.
The Malin family eventually had to sell the
house due to nancial difficulties; after years
of neglect, Lautners sci- design was given
a new lease of life when German publisher
Benedikt Taschen bought it in 1998. Since
he took ownership, the house has become
a cultural hotspot and plays host to regular
celebrity soires, which have seen the likes
of Jeff Koons and Helmut Newton drop by.

moved back to his hometown of Paternoster,
a shing village on South Africas west coast, and
created the rustic coastal restaurant Oep ve Koep

from a tiny kitchen in a former shark-liver oil

more of a creamy umami, seaweed-inspired menu
and in summer the avours are fresh and zingy,
he says. Most of the ingredients are from plants
indigenous to the Strandveld dunes, such as soutslaai
(salt salad), dune spinach and dune celery, as well
as seaweeds such as sea lettuce and kelp that Kobus
hand-picks. Also on the list is slow-growing
heerenboontjie, a small South African heritage bean
similar to the butter bean, which few farmers now
grow. Kobus dishes are devised with sustainability
in mind. Mediterranean mussels are plucked from
the rocks of Paternoster and put on the menu
alongside abundant sh, including kob, angelsh
and bokkoms, the plentiful sun-dried mullet of the
West Coast. Craysh popular in Cape restaurants
is denitely off the menu as it is under immense

and his wife Ludovica
Rubbini took over the
running of the family restaurant, El Brite de
Larieto, in Cortina eight years ago. Initially they
kept the original menu, but Riccardo was soon
inspired to put his mountain homeland at the
heart of his cooking. I was taught to follow
tradition, but not to depend on it. Instead, I try
to honour it through innovation, he says.
Riccardo began dreaming up more rened
recipes based around the produce from the
family farm (meat, cheese and vegetables) and
the local area, and soon came up with the idea
for Brite Mobile a mobile extension of the
main restaurant. One day Ludovica and I took
a trip to Mount Cristallo, which overlooks
Cortina, and we started wondering if it would
be possible to have lunch up there, or in any of
the other breathtaking locations nearby,
explains Riccardo. They hired local carpenter
Christian Menardi to design them a freestanding
kitchen made of local woods that could be
attached to the back of a tractor and transported
wherever they wanted even the beautiful
mountaintop venue of their dreams.
Last summer, the couple invited friends for
a few trial lunches (Brite Mobile officially
launches this July) and while Riccardo was in

charge of the kitchen, Ludovica perfected the

table setting. It reects the colours of nature
and our surroundings. The cotton table runner
is meant to represent a piece of blue sky, says
Ludovica, who sourced the runner from interior
shop LOfficina di Oui in Bologna. The white
ceramic dishes and chopping boards were
handmade by the couples friend Sara Farina.
Riccardo cooks simple dishes for his guests:
spaghetti with mountain pine oil and crispy
bacon with chickpeas and spinach. I say that
I am a slave to seasonality, because I love
to put the freshest things I can nd on my
guests plates. If I cook with humility and
a pinch of passion, its the perfect recipe.

The philosophy for the design
of the table setting is the same
as the ethos for our mobile
kitchen: it is practical without
sacricing quality. Simple,
durable accessories are essential
as we use a tractor to transport
everything up the mountain.
We created a casual look,
because we want our guests
to feel relaxed: the idea is based
on a picnic. The runner is
a linen-mix fabric in a denim
colour, which I love to wear
as well as use decoratively. It
has a beautiful texture; it feels
different to denim as the weave
is larger and the fabric is softer.
The tableware is light but
not too delicate. Some of the
plates are white enamelled tin
(Falcon plates are similar);
others are a mustard colour and
one is made of pewter. The
ceramic dishes were handmade
by our friend Sara Farina [her

lisabeth Verdier, an interior designer and owner of French lifestyle

store Mona Market, designed this two-floor, 180-square-metre
Corsican summer retreat with her architect son, Thomas Rondony,
and husband, Andre Verdier, a structural engineer. Nevertheless, the house
took four years to build before she could begin decorating. Her chosen
coastal colour scheme conjures up a cool, comfortable aesthetic. Today,
owing fabrics waft at the windows and the furniture from the kitchen
island to the beds is all bespoke and handmade.
The family bought the plot in the Bay of San Ciprianu 10 years ago, after
falling for the picturesque maquis (shrubland) landscape that is typical of
Corsica. Their house is purpose-built for relaxation and entertaining and,
as such, has generous communal and private spaces inside and out. My
husband describes the design as a very long bridge, says Elisabeth of the
rectangular block, which is softened by an overhanging roof garden, and
wisteria that trails in violet blooms over the terrace.
The natural landscape dictated the architectural details of the building:
the thick concrete walls were designed to withstand the searing summer
heat, an elevated veranda provides shade for the pool, and the roof garden
blends the whole house with its rugged setting. Metal shutters clad the
windows and diffuse the strong sunlight, while a suspended glass cube
(the location of the kitchen) juts out like an enormous birds nest to maximise
the treetop views. Inside, there are no industrial-style steel supports on
show these are concealed in a layer between the two oors creating an
open-plan space that has a Modernist feel, with textural concrete walls.
The strong lines of the interior are balanced by swathes of vivid blue linen,
which were specially commissioned in sheer and opaque panels for the
windows and are echoed in the soft furnishings throughout. Much of
the fabric is the work of African artist and textile designer Aboubakar Fofana,
who came to Elisabeths attention when she was sourcing products for her
shop. I met Aboubakar 10 years ago at the start of his career, says Elisabeth.
For her, the woven textures and indigo dyeing techniques are a constant
reminder of the calm bay and cloudless skies that frame her home.
I believe that each home has a special story, she says. I chose these materials
specically for this space, but my choices would be completely different for
another house in another location. When I return here every year Im very
happy to nd this place like it is. Its a great pleasure to have such a wonderful
home that instantly puts the whole family at ease. monamarket.com

I N S PI R E D B Y I N DIG O
Homeowner Elisabeth tells us more about the
beautiful deep-blue fabrics that decorate her home
Most of the indigo fabrics that adorn the house were created by textile
designer Aboubakar Fofana (above). Fofana uses the traditional,
chemical-free and painstaking process of dyeing by fermentation,
an ancient technique that originated in his home country of Mali,
west Africa. The hand-harvested leaves of the tropical indigo plant
are used to dye organic linen, silk and cashmere in a spectrum of blues.
The designer is renowned in fashion and design circles for his revival
of this once largely forgotten African skill. He also uses a brown
pigment from the Niger River, says Elisabeth, who has been working
with Fofana for 10 years. In this house it is all about the blue, though.
Its a reection of the sea and the sky that surrounds our home.
Over the centuries, indigo has been used not just because of its
gorgeous colour, which has a cooling effect in the heat of the sun, but
also due to its natural insect repelling properties. Its the perfect
colour for summer. If I want a change I might add something in
turquoise, yellow or orange, but the dominant colour will always
stay the same, says Elisabeth (ateliercourbet.com).

the Maramotti family, owners of the Max Mara
fashion group a noteworthy fact because this

Goldman Ward, an architect who specialises in

Christopher shares Casa Ward (as it has been

their two children, Maria Vittoria (10) and
Gregorio Christopher (seven). The family
purchased the land from Alessandras father
in 2012 and spent the next few years building
their home. The resulting three-storey property,
which includes three bedrooms and four

and Californian architecture, particularly the
work of John Lautner. I wanted to create
something simple yet sophisticated, says
Christopher. To play with modest architecture,
but clad it in rich and warm materials.

A HOUSE SHOULD
BE DESIGNED TO FIT

SUIT IN TERMS OF
LAYOUT, MATERIALS
AND FURNITURE
The rst of these materials to catch the eye
is the traditional-looking stone of the faade.
Its actually Geopietra, a pre-cut stone veneer
thats simply glued in place. It is used on the
veranda and on the wall in the living area, which
has a mid-century modern feel.
Wood is the dominant texture in the doubleheight dining space. A continuous flow of
American walnut begins at the bottom of the
spiral staircase, covering most of the ceiling and
culminating in a wood-clad bathroom upstairs.
This considered use of materials reduces the
need for further architectural ornamentation.
Pieces that Christopher created for the property,
including the wall-to-wall shelving unit and
replace in the living room, mingle comfortably
with an enviable catalogue of designer pieces,
including Eloro seating by Rodolfo Dordoni
for Cassina, Eames and Panton chairs by Vitra
and a Superarchimoon oor light by Flos.
A house needs to t like a tailored suit in

Christopher says. This villa wasnt designed to

THE FURNISHINGS
1 Vintage lounge chair by Gi Ponti
This mid-century piece, refurbished here
in vibrant fabrics, is credited to Italian
designer Gi Ponti (18911979). His style
evolved throughout his lifetime: in the
1920s his chairs were colourful and
gently angled, evocative of the age. By the
1960s when this design dates from his
aesthetic explored soft naturalistic forms
shown in this sinuous shape. Try 1st Dibs

The mix I wanted to play
with the contrast between
natural warm materials and
cooler contemporary ones.
The exterior of the house

Geopietra stone veneer,
American walnut, charred
wood and Metropolis
Factor resin, which is thick

Ive used Kerakoll
Cementocrudo resin,
which has a smooth

Both resins come in a range
of colours and are durable,
but also quite beautiful.
The detail When it came
to the bronzed front door,
I wanted it to be different
from the rest of the faade,
in order to highlight the
entrance. The same
burnished iron also appears
in the interior in the living

and on the replace.
The quality I like to
experiment, but its more
important to work with the
best materials on the

in the beginning always ends
up costing you eventually.
Ive always loved natural
materials: for me, they are
the best expression of luxury,
and they bring warmth and
comfort to a house. E D

This Hollywood home in Los Feliz is made for

This 279-square-metre home is situated in Los Feliz, a neighbourhood above East Hollywood.
The architecture is classically Californian, and the owners enjoy stunning views over the city

hen its 72 degrees and sunny in the winter, the

Los Angeles climate really makes life simpler
especially when you have four kids and a dog, says
Filip, a commercials director who moved here with his wife
Isabelle 12 years ago. Theres no rain, and no winter clothes.
The couple live in this 279-square-metre home in Los Feliz,
a neighbourhood that sits above East Hollywood and below
the iconic observatory in Griffith Park, with Selma (eight),
August (seven), Gosta (four), Greta (two), and new puppy,
Baltazar. You wont nd an area thats closer in spirit to the
golden era of Hollywood, says Isabelle. Its one of the few
places in Los Angeles where you can feel some history. A lot
of the lmmakers of the silent era built their homes here.
The couple havent altered the property much structurally,
but the kitchen was one of the few major renovations. It was
typically LA and 1990s in style when we moved in, with white
limestone counters and a massive island in the middle. We
ripped it out and recongured it, putting a dining table in.
Now we always hang out there, all together, cooking and eating

Now we always

or just talking. They have also lightened the interior, adding fresh, cool
tiling. The result is an environment that is comfortable rather than stark.
Apart from the architectural details, the rest of the house has a clean white
palette, says Filip. Its allowed us to put in wild patterned ooring and
rugs. We also brought a lot of things from Sweden candleholders and
pillows so that we are surrounded with objects that feel personal.
This is a home that feels sturdy, with lots of wood and rugged touches
of brass and bronze in the detailing. The architecture is classically Californian,
with an abundance of beams overhead and colonial ironwork on the staircase.
A lot of the people that came here in the early 1900s brought fragments
of their cultures with them, says Isabelle, so you have a mix of Spanish
colonial, English Tudor and French Normandy inuences. It is the vaulted
wooden ceiling in the living room that really sold them on the house, though.
With that wood, the large fireplace, and the beautiful vistas over
Los Angeles, this room is very easy to fall in love with, says Filip.

CITY SLICKER
This apartment in Barcelona has been transformed from a series of small,
dark rooms into a glorious light-filled, open-plan home.
Here, its owners reveal their tricks for stylish metropolitan living
Words JACKIE DALY Photography MICHELE CUREL

C R E AT E A N O P E N - P L A N S PA C E
We spent a year renovating the apartment. Originally, it was
divided into a series of small rooms with false ceilings, dark
brown paint and carpet throughout. But we could see that just
by removing a few walls and the ceilings, it could be converted
into a great living space. Our friend and architect, Joan Antonio
Gomez, helped with the drawings for the new open-plan layout.

Living area Homeowners John and Anke are the co-founders of Minotti London; the apartment is furnished with lots of the brands hero pieces, including
a large, inviting Andersen sofa, a Dibbets rug and a Bellagio side table. The vases and accessories include pieces from Moooi and Zara Home

dream, dividing their time between London
(John is managing director of Minotti
London and Dutch-born Anke is its creative
director) and their home in Ciutat Vella,
a district in the heart of Barcelonas Old Town,
which they share with their daughter Nienke.
Their neighbourhood bustles with tourists, who flock to the
Gothic Quarter to soak up its history. Plaa Sant Jaume, the political
centre of the city, is located just next door, as is the characterful
Jewish Quarter and shopping mecca, Portal dAngel. I never tire
of walking down the narrow lanes lled with bars and restaurants,
although it can get rather crowded, especially in the summer
months. I think we could eat in a different place here every day
and never run out of new experiences, says Anke. While they enjoy
the old-world charms of Barcelona on their doorstep, the couple
have created a contemporary feel in their apartment. Here Anke
tells us how she achieves her pared-back aesthetic, which is perfect
for modern city living. minottilondon.com

GO WITH THE FLOW

A good layout will aid the ow of natural light and people
through a home. We recongured our apartment in order to
create a spacious hallway that leads to the main living space,
and our two en-suite bedrooms and guest bathroom. The
entrance hall is large enough to accommodate an office desk
(above), which sits neatly between two extra-wide doorways
that we designed to maintain the airy, open aesthetic.

M A K E I T M U LT I F U N C T I O N A L
We opened up the entire space at the front of the apartment
to create a living-dining hub overlooking the plaza (see previous
page). There is no traffic here all we can hear is the sound of
street musicians and the hum of the crowds. We also used
sliding oak doors to allow for exibility. The adjoining kitchen
(see overleaf ) becomes part of the main living space when the
doors are opened, but it can easily be closed-off for privacy.

We uncovered the wooden beams beneath a false ceiling and
exposed the bare-brick wall in the living area during the
renovation work. As there are so few original features in the at,
we decided to integrate them into our new scheme. They
instantly add to the ambience and soften the edges of the linear
interior. The old tiled oor was too damaged to keep, so we
replaced it with these Spanish cement tiles (above). They are
inset into the ooring, to create an eye-catching, easy-clean rug.

C O N C E A L S T O R A G E I N T H E WA L L S
There is always a need for ample cupboard space when you have
a family, so this was a priority for us when we refurbished our
apartment. We wanted the storage to be invisible (not intrusive)
and, as such, incorporated it into the walls behind slick doors
that are nished in a matt white lacquer (above). Weve also used
this trick in the living room and bedrooms.

Kitchen We designed the kitchen ourselves and had it made by a local carpenter, says Anke. A Y! high table by Gubi is teamed with 3D barstools by Komplot

We kept to a restrained colour scheme to create a

ceiling beams in the bedrooms and bathrooms to stand
out. We combined as many materials as possible
throughout the interior including Corian kitchen
worktops, a marble dining table, brass taps, and a mix
of subtly toned silk, cotton and velvet fabrics.

his contemporary country

house in the heart of the
Luberon valley is home to Danish
designer Hanne Benoist, her
farmer husband, Gilles, and their daughter
Amandine, one of the couples three grown children
(who is an architect by profession). The couple sold
their designer boutique business in Paris in 2008
and bought two hectares of land near Gordes, a
well-preserved village with breathtaking views
across a valley in Provence-Alpes-Cte dAzur.
On the plot sat the ruins of an old tannery and
a 150-square-metre, 19th-century stone farmhouse,
which the family renovated and sold. They then
began building their own stone-clad property from
scratch: it has an eco-conscious construction, with
hollow bricks that help to keep the interior naturally
cool in summer, and is sympathetic in style to the
local design vernacular. The old tannery is now the
poolhouse, while a separate guest house next door accommodates visitors.
It took ve years to complete the whole building project and required the services of
several skilled masons and local craftspeople. Building a stone house is not exactly an
easy task, says Hanne. We used traditional construction techniques that are particular
to this area. The couple trained the builders themselves to lay the Gordes stone, which
clads the buildings faades. Gilles rented machinery and excavated much of the stone
himself from around the site. Each piece was cut, shaped and laid in place using
a natural mortar of lime, sand and a little marble powder. A natural limestone plaster is
used throughout the interior and allows the building to breathe.
Inside, a mezzanine level overlooks the open-plan living area, where a huge sofa
reupholstered in cashmere by Hanne offers ample space for informal gatherings. For
Hanne, the interior is still a work in progress. I never sit down, she laughs. Nothing is
ever nished here. She designed and produced much of the furniture herself and often
attends design fairs in Paris to pick up ideas and new pieces. Outside, a covered dining
space the perfect spot for family meals overlooks the gardens pear and almond trees,
which segue into the olive groves and a eld of fragrant lavender beyond.

A NEW-BUILD HOME
TRADITIONAL CHARM
Homeowner Hanne tells us how she
created her houses authentic feel
Reclaimed materials The stone oors
are made from reclaimed bricks found
in Spain and transported to the house
Hanne wanted to recreate the look of the
orangeries she had seen in old castles.
Raw timber The ceilings are made with
new wood, but we left the timber outside
for some time and did not treat it, so it
looks natural and rustic, says Hanne.
Traditional crafts The zellige tiles on
the walls in the kitchen are new designs
by Hanne, produced in Marrakesh using
traditional methods. I created the
patterns and had them produced in
black, white and grey, explains Hanne.
Handmade pieces I also designed
much of the furniture myself and had
it made in wood, says Hanne. It is
intended to be unobtrusive, so as not to
disturb the architecture of the house.
Natural nishes The bedding and
curtains are linen, and I had the sofas
reupholstered in cashmere, says Hanne.
The tiles and wood surfaces are polished
and protected by natural beeswax. There
are no toxins in this nish and it creates
a beautiful texture. It requires a little
more elbow grease to apply than
synthetic patinas, but is much nicer
and well worth the effort.

a grand piano for evening performances, and a balcony up in the
foliage-framed rafters. The menu is as sensual as the space, serving
French-themed plates such as prawn consomm (alcazar.fr).

owned by the Lytes family botanist Henry Lyte was best known for translating one of the rst manuals of herbal

TOAST OF COPENHAGEN

Fusing the trend for new Nordic cuisine think foraged ingredients and innovative cooking methods and
beautiful Danish interiors, the second outpost of now world-famous restaurant Kadeau is a treat for the eyes
and the tastebuds. Concealed behind an unassuming inky-blue door, the Copenhagen eatery seats just 29 diners.
The interior, created by OeO Studio, features a mix of warm grained woods and dark stone that reects the island
home of head chef Nicolai Nrregaard. The gorgeous anthracite oil-stained Douglas Fir oor is by Dinesen and
the open-plan copper kitchen is by local rm Garde Hvalse. This is where, using Electrolux Grand Cuisine
appliances, Nrregaard and his team prepare their 20-course tasting menu, which includes delicacies such as
oyster with hemp and parsley wrapped in kale, fermented ower petals and preserved berries (kadeau.dk).
Visit this Holidaying in southern Italy? If so, we recommend a day trip to see an extraordinary new installation
in the ancient port town of Siponto. Created by 28-year-old artist Edoardo Tresoldi, the vast and enchanting
wire-mesh reconstruction of an early Romanesque basilica rises from the excavated site of a 12th-century
church. Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore di Siponto, 71043 Manfredonia, Puglia (beniculturali.gov.it).

Norwichs Sainsbury Centre for

shown beside those by the artists he

Arlecchini cabinet by Piero Fornasetti

WORDS: AMY BRADFORD

Italian artist Piero Fornasetti rst painted harlequin designs in the 1930s and they became a recurring
theme for him, appearing on cabinets designed by his friend and collaborator Gi Ponti and on a series
of panels created in 1949 for Milans Cinema Arlecchino (which survives to this day). Now, the Fornasetti
brand has re-interpreted this pattern on its new Arlecchini cabinet, which comes in a choice of cherry red
or cobalt blue and shows harlequins performing acrobatic tricks. Each cabinet is printed and lacquered
by hand using traditional techniques and has three shelves inside for storing precious possessions.
