ABSTRACT
At the moment, the generation of electricity in our country from renewable sources (not including the big
hydroelectric ones) is very low, being the wind the one of greater participation. In order to achieve a more robust
energy security in the medium and long term, the country must have a technological support that takes into account
the adequate complementarity and implementation of all the technologies and energy sources that it has. In northern
Colombia, specifically in the department of La Guajira, renewable resources are wide and varied, which favors the
transition to this new model of energy generation.
Keywords generation of electricity, energy generation.

I. INTRODUCTION
Due to the geographical location of our country, Colombia has a wealth of resources that allow it to meet its energy demand
today. However the processes of production and the irrational use of energy are the fundamental cause of the environmental
deterioration on our planet. The inevitable exhaustion of fossil fuels and the irreversible damage to the environment requires the
adoption of new strategies in the field of energy generation. These strategies should be considered the basis for a sustainable
development model, which will meet the needs of the current generation and preserve the possibilities for future generations to
find solutions to meet their needs.

Assessment of the solar potential of the Caribbean region

Regarding the evaluation of the solar potential, models have been applied for the prediction of solar radiation because the
number of measuring stations installed in the Caribbean region are not its clients. Significant efforts have been made to develop
more robust models that calculate solar radiation from meteorological data measured with conventional stations. In 1924
Angstrom proposed the first theoretical model for the estimation of global solar radiation based on solar brightness, which is a
variable that is currently measured in the Colombian Caribbean region. In general terms, for the evaluation of the solar potential,
the monthly averages of the astronomical duration of the day (daily length of day or maximum hours of daylight) are calculated,
after which the monthly average of solar extraterrestrial radiation is calculated on the surface Horizontal, the Angstrom model is
developed, the evaluation of available solar energy is realized for places that possess or only solar brightness or global solar
radiation.
Evaluation of wind potential
For the evaluation of the distributions of wind speeds and the frequency of variation of the wind directions the wind rose has
been made, which is divided into 12 sectors each 30o of the horizon. Taking into account the wind rose is very important to
determine the orientation of a wind turbine. It is important to consider that if the majority of wind energy comes from a particular
direction, the generated wind energy must be located in such a direction, so in this direction there are the smallest obstacles and
the terrain is smoother.

I CONCLUSION
For the development of partial solar radiation maps, we used data from a few measurement stations located on the Colombian
Caribbean coast, which is expected to improve these maps with the application of a model that allows the use of the database of
solar brightness , Which contains information about 5 to 25 years old, and are under study in the project for the evaluation of
wind and solar potential in the Colombian Caribbean region, with the support of UPME, IDEAM and Colciencias. In addition,
the use of GIS technology tools allowed the generation of maps of brightness and global radiation that should be improved with
the calculation of the constants of the Angstrom model with all the stations that today have measurements of sunlight only using
The IDW interpolation method in the ArcGIS SIG software.
