RestrictingCharacteristics
Use
Whendefiningaquery,youcanrestrictcharacteristicstosinglecharacteristicvalues,valueranges,
hierarchynodesorcharacteristicvaluevariables.

Prerequisites
Youwanttorestrictacharacteristictooneormorevaluesinthequeryorrestrictedkeyfiguredefinition.
Youhaveselectedthecharacteristicandchosen Restrict fromthecontextmenu(secondarymouseclick).

Procedure
Whenyouselectcharacteristicsinthequerydefinition,youcanusethesamefunctionsastheF4Helpin
theexecutedquery.Forthefollowingfunctions,seethedescriptionsunderSelectingFilterValues.

Selectingvariables
Whenyouselectcharacteristicvaluesinthequerydefinition,youcanalsoselectvariablesinsteadoffixed
values.Theseactasbenchmarksandareonlyfilledwithfixedvalueswhenthequeryisexecuted.
Selectingsinglevaluevariables
1.Choose SingleValue inthetopleftareaoftheselectionfieldand flatlist inthetopright.
2.Selectthe Variables tabpage.
3.Selectone(or,inexceptionalcases,morethanone)variablefromthelistofavailablevariables
displayedinthelefthandwindow,anddragthevariable(s)intothe Selection boxontheright
(alternatively,usethepushbuttonwiththearrowpointingtotherighttomovethevalues).

1.Choose ValueRange fromthetopleftoftheselectionfield,andtheoperatorthatyouwanttouse(top
right).
2.Selectthe Variables tabpage.
3.Ifyouhavechosentheoperator Between ,firstselectboththeupperandlowerintervallimitsfromthe
upper
listofavailablevariablesdisplayedinthelefthandwindowanddragthemusingDrag&Drop(orusing
thearrowpointingtotheright)inthe Selection windowontherighthandsideofthescreen.
Ifyouchooseoneoftheoperators Isgreaterthanorequalto , Islessthanorequalto , Isgreater
than, or Islessthan ,selectavaluefromthelistofavailablevariablesinthelefthandwindow,dragit
across,anddropitintothe Selection windowontheright(alternativelyusethebuttonwiththearrow
pointingtotherighttomovethevariableacrossintothe Selection window).
Selectingintervalswithvariablesandafixedlimit
1.Inthetopleftcorneroftheselectionfield,choose value range and between asoperator.
2.Selectthefixedlimitonthe FixedValues tab.
3.Selectthevariablelimitonthe Variables tab.
4.Finally,choosethearrowbuttonpointingtotheright.
Selectingintervalswhoseupperandlowerlimitsrefertothesamevariable

1.Selecttherequiredvariableintherighthandwindow.
2.Choose variableoffsets fromthecontextmenu(secondarymouseclick) . Thisbringsyoutothe
dialogwindow EnteringVariableOffsets .
3.Entertherequiredoffset.
4.Choose OK .

Youwanttoselecttheperiodofthelast5yearsforevaluatingyourdata.
Inthetopleftcorneroftheselectionfield,choose value range and between as
operator.
Selectthevariable currentcalendaryear fromthe Variables tabpageanddragitinto
the Selection boxontheright(orusethearrowiconpointingtotheright).
Choose variableoffsets fromthecontextmenu(secondarymouseclick) . The
VariablesOffsets popupappearsforboththeupperandlowerintervallimits.

Excludingvariablevalues
Youusethisfunctiontoselectthevaluesthatyoudonotneedforyourreport.

Thisfunctionisonlyvalidforsinglevaluevariablesandnotforvariablequantities.
1.Selectthedesiredvalueintheright Selection window.
2.Choose ExcludefromSelection fromthecontextmenu(secondarymouseclick) .

Ifyouwanttoincludethevalueintheselectionagain,choose IncludeinSelection from

thecontextmenu(secondarymouseclick).

Directentry

Youcannotusethisfunctionifyouwanttorestrictthecharacteristic.Youcannotmakea
directentrywhenyouareselectingstructureelements(forexample,keyfigures)orvalues
fromahierarchy.
1.Intheentryfield(bottomleft)specifyacharacteristicvalueinexternalformat.
Insteadofcharacteristicvaluesinexternalformat,youcanalsoentervariablesintheformof&
<variablename>&(ampersand(&)atthebeginningandattheendoftheentry,andwithoutblank
spaces).
2.Choosethebuttonwiththearrowpointingtotheright.
Thesystemcheckswhetherthisvalueexists.Ifthevaluedoesnotexist,yougetawarning.However,
youcanstillusethevalueinthevariable.

Notethefollowingconventionsformakingentriesforvaluerangesandintervals:
Valuerange:<operator><value>,forexample,>=1995
Intervals:<lowerlimit><upperlimit>,e.g.A01B99

Intervalwithavariablelimit,forexample,&VAR&2000
Emptycharactersarenotallowedinthesefields.

Result
Youhavenowrestrictedacharacteristicbycertaincharacteristicvalues.Choose OK .Youreturntothe
querydefinition.Saveyourentriesandexecutethequery.

Ifyouhaverestrictedacharacteristictoavariablevalue,beforethequeryisexecuted,a
dialogboxappearsforyoutoentervariablevaluesmanually(providedthatthevariableis
flaggedas readyforinput ).Formoreinformation,seeUsingVariables:TheVariable
WizardandtheVariableEditor.
Entertherequiredvaluesandchoose OK .Thequeryisnowexecutedwiththechosen
values.
Thequeryiscreatedaccordingtoyourselectionconditions.Theselectedcharacteristicvaluesare
displayedinthefiltercells,ontheright,nexttothecorrespondingcharacteristic.Onlythecharacteristic
