Think, Pair, Share

Ask students to put notes away, and take out a half sheet of paper and a writing utensil. When
the students have taken out the materials have them look up at the teacher for further
instruction. Next, students will have 21 seconds to find their lovestruck partner and sit shoulder
to shoulder with them. The signal that 21 seconds is up will be Who lives in a pineapple under
the sea & the students will respond with spongebob square pants and know that they are
ready for further instruction. On the half sheet of paper, the students will have 41 seconds to
write down why each axis power went to war. When the timer rings, they will turn to their
lovestruck partner and the person with the longest hair will share what they came up with first.
The timer will sound after 38 seconds and the partners will switch, the one sharing will listen,
and the one listening will share for an additional 38 seconds. When the timer is up the teacher
will say pencils down, eyes on me, and the lesson will progress. Check for understanding will
be followed after instruction before the students are able to begin.
ASK: Who is your love struck partner?
What will you be writing down?
Who gets to share first?
How long do you have before I give the signal to switch roles?
Someone please summarize for us what we are about to do.
Teacher will walk around the classroom while the students share to make sure they are
understanding. When the activity is complete, the teacher will call on two volunteers to share
what their partner came up with.
INFORMATION: ALLIES
THE UNITED

Franklin D.

The United States had

STATES (ALLIES)

Roosevelt

participated in
Isolationism during
this time, hoping that
they would not have to
enter another war. The
bombing of Pearl
Harbor forced the
United States to
declare war on Japan,
thus also declaring
war on Japan's allies.

THE UNITED
KINGDOM (ALLIES)

Winston Churchill

After the
establishment of
Poland after the Treaty
of Versaille, The UK
made an agreement
with Poland stating
that if anyone attacked
Poland the UK would
protect them. Hitler
invaded Poland
forcing the UK to
declare war on
Germany.

THE SOVIET UNION

(ALLIES)

Joseph Stalin

Stalin and Hitler had

originally made an
agreement stating that
they would be allies if
war were to break out.
Hitler went behind
Stalin's back,
betraying him, and
leaving Stalin no
choice but to join the
USA & UK. Stalin did
this because the
Soviet army was not
up to par with that of
the Axis powers, and if
he sided with the
allies, they would send
him weapons.

understanding.
Guided Practice: Each student will be put into a group of three and each student will grab a
laptop. The students will be put into a group of three by being counted off by the teacher. The
students will be using a website called Popplet to create thought webs for each axis and allied
power. The students will discuss with their groups which powers they will work on since each
student will choose one axis and one allied power to work on individually. The students will use
their notes from lecture to fill in the information. The students are required to have at least four
bubbles for each power. The students will look over each others piece before submitting it
online to the teacher. The finished product for the group should have six thought webs total. The
students will have fifteen minutes to complete this activity.
Before the students start working on the activity the teacher will make sure everybody
understands how to use Popplet and will ask:
How many people to a group?
How will the groups be assigned?
How many powers will each person be working on?
How many bubbles for each power?
What should the final product look like?
How long will you have to complete the activity?

During the activity, the teacher will be walking around and working with groups to make sure the
students are on task and understand the assignment.
