Unit 3: Outcome 2
Due: End of
Week 13

Written Case Study Report

Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student should be able to describe how
visual communications are designed and produced in the design industry and explain
factors that influence these practices.
The Task:
After attending the Visual Communication Victoria Forum, students were introduced to
three different designers (Australian and/or International) from communication,
environmental and industrial design fields.
Students will complete a written case study report on a designer and a particular design
brief. This designer can be from the VCV Forum or a designer of their choice. This report
will be 500-700 words in length.
Questions that need to be answered:
1. Identify what skills are required by the designer to undertake the design brief?
Specifically related to their chosen design field
2. Analyse the relationship between the client and the designer, and explain the
impact of that relationship on the design process.
3. How could this designer collaborate with another specialist?
4. Describe the steps a designer takes in the development and production of a visual
communication solution
5. Create a diagram which visualizes this design process
6. Explain how the designer decided to use particular methods, materials, media and
design elements and principles in their visual communication solution
7. Describe the process undertaken by designers in the evaluation and assessment of
the design process
Top Tips:
Highlight key words in the task so that you know what you have to address in your
response
Plan out your response before starting your report e.g. diagram, brainstorm, clear
headings, splitting the page into a grid
Use spell check frequently
Set out the report clearly with headings
Include visual images of the designer, their previous work and drawings
Use correct terminology (use your class notes for reference)
