After the students complete the warm up, followed by the mini lecture and the assignment that follows,
students will be able to not only use the historical thinking skill of evidence and interpretation to help them
analysis the primer sources given to them and also use the compare and contrast skill to answer the
questions on the assignment.

Students will be able to analyze primary sources such as interviews on both boxers and images to make a
valid compare and comprise prospective and answer the historical question that is presented.

Historical Thinking Skill, California Content, and Common Core Standards Addressed:
Thinking Skill: Evidence and interpretation and compare and contrast.
California Content: 11.10.4 exam the role of civil rights advocates.
Common Core: Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources, noting when
the findings support or contradict previous explanations or accounts.

Inquiry-Based Lesson Plan for History-Social Science


1. Anticipatory Set

Time:10 min

Students will take out class notebook to answer the warm-up question:
If you spent your whole life earning something that meant the world to you only to be stripped of it because
of you beliefs how would you see those who took it from you?

2. Central Historical Question for Lesson

Time: 5 min

How did the rivalry between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier represent and impacted the image of civil rights
in the United States?

3. Teacher Input (delivery of historical context)

Time: 10 min

Mini Lecture: After a brief Youtube clip the mini lecture will briefly explain a bit of information on the two
fighters to set up a sort of compare and contrast idea on the two of them.

differentiation)

1. Students will break up into groups of three working with nearly by classmates according to the
seating chart, although studetns will be able to work with classmates they must each answer the
questions on their own paper for a grade.
2. After the lecture the students will be given three documents one in the form of an interview between
Ail and Frazier as well as two images that show the difference in both men.

5. Lesson Assessment (w/ differentiation)

Time: 15 min

1. Students will be given a question worksheet that relates to what they have just analyzed from the
documents presented.
2. At the end of the questioner the students will write down a brief summary comparing both fighters
and what each represented in the civil rights movement.
3. The assignment is classwork and if not completed it will be homework.
