Storming Heaven Unit: English 12 / 12 CR

Unit Objective/Rationale: Students will read and analyze various formats of information to form their own valid, justified opinion, a skill
that will aid them in their future.
***Writers Notebook (WN), Sustained Silent Reading (SSR), Storming Heaven (SH), Truth Be Told Perspectives on the Great West
Virginia Mine War 1890-Present (TBT), When Miners March (WMM)
***Have students use writers notebook for big ideas/what stood out to them from each reading
***Do a self-reflection (likert) as pre & posttest
Objectives:
1. Students will use their knowledge of analyzed informational texts- Truth Be Told and When Miners March- as well as the
novel, Storming Heaven to explain how the events correspond.
2. Students will reflect on readings of material in class (literature and informational text)- how it relates to the real world/their life
and their feelings about the subject(s).
3. Students will gather and integrate multiple sources to justify an argument/topic of their choosing related to the unit.
