APPLIED MATHEMATICS 1B (MATH142)

TUTORIAL 12 (31 OCTOBER4 NOVEMBER)

1. The 50 kg block is hoisted up the incline by the motor

and cable. The motor develops a tension of 300 + 120 t

newtons in the cable, where t is in seconds. The coecient
of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.4.
At the instant shown the block is moving up the plane at
2 m/s. Determine the velocity of the block 2 seconds later.
(Ans. 1.92 m/s)
2. A 40 gram ball is hit over a time interval of 3 milliseconds by a
driver. The ball leaves with a velocity of 35 m/s at an angle of 40 to
the horizontal. Neglect the balls weight while it is struck. Find the
magnitude of the average impulsive force exerted on the ball during
impact and the linear momentum of the ball 1 second after it leaves
the club face. (Ans. 466.67 N and 1.19 kg m/s)
3. A 60 gram bullet is red with a velocity of 600 m/s
into the 3 kg block of soft wood initially at rest on the
horizontal surface. The bullet emerges from the block
with the velocity 400 m/s, and the block is observed
to slide a distance of 2.7 m before coming to rest. Determine the coecient of kinetic friction between the
block and the horizontal surface. (Ans. 0.3)
4. A bullet of mass m is red horizontally into an armoured box of mass M , attached to a
string of length l. The bullet comes to rest inside the box and as a result the box moves,
coming to an instantaneous stop when the string makes an angle to the vertical. Show how
this
device)
(ballistic pendulum) may be used to determine the speed of the bullet. (Ans. speed

m
5. A 1 kg ball A is travelling horizontally at 20 m/s when it strikes a 10 kg block B that is at
rest on a horizontal plane. The coecient of restitution between A and B is e = 0.6 and the
coecient of friction between B and the horizontal plane is k = 0.4.
(a) Determine the time for block B to stop sliding. (Ans. 0.74 s)
(b) What is the distance that B slides in this time? (Ans. 1.08 m)
6. A 10 kg block A is released from rest 2 m above the 5
kg plate P , which can slide freely along the smooth vertical
guides BC and DE. The coecient of restitution between
the block and the plate is e = 0.75. Determine the velocity of the block and the plate just after impact. What is
the maximum subsequent compression of the spring due to
impact? The spring has an unstretched length of 600 mm.
(Ans. vA = 2.61 m/s, vP = 7.31 m/s and d = 0.32 m)

7. Two smooth discs A and B have masses 1 kg and 2.5 kg,

respectively. They are sliding on a horizontal plane with the
velocities shown. The coecient of restitution between the
discs is e = 0.6.
(a) Determine the velocity vectors of A and B just after
impact. (Ans. vA = 3.13 i 1.06 j and vB = 0.93 i 1.5 j)
(b) Find the angle through which A deects due to the impact. (Ans. 18.71 )

8. The 2 kg ball is thrown so that it travels horizontally at 10 m/s when it strikes the 6 kg
block as it is travelling down the inclined plane at 1 m/s. The coecient of restitution between
the ball and the block is e = 0.6 and the coecient of kinetic friction between the block and
the plane is k = 0.4.
(a) Determine the velocity vectors of the ball and the
block just after impact. (Hint: Let the line of impact
be the x axis.) (Ans. vA = 3.08 i 3.42 j and vB =
3.16 i)
(b) What distance does B slide up the plane before it
stops momentarily? (Ans. 0.71 m)
