Construction Project: An Overview

Summary

Construction is the process of constructing a building or infrastructure. Construction

differs from manufacturing in that manufacturing typically involves mass production of similar
items without a designated purchaser, while construction typically takes place on location for a
known client. Construction as an industry comprises six to nine percent of the gross domestic
product of developed countries. Construction starts with planning, design, and financing then
continues until the project is built and ready for use.

The construction project basically have four phases. The first one is feasibility study,
second phase is design/engineering phase, third is construction phase and last phase is
operation and maintenance.The speaker which is Ir. Ahmad Kamal Kunji most highlight about
the third phase which is construction phase.

The first step in construction phase is the assurance of the contract exist prior to
commencing field works. The document contract is important in the construction industry to
reduce risk. The document contract only formed when there are the offer from the contractors
and the acceptance from the client (Offer + Acceptance = Agreement ). Based on approval from
both parties, there will exist the written agreement as the contract document. The document
contract must be signed by authorized person which is someone who have power and have the
right to approve. The approval part is important to make sure the legal relation of construction
project. When both parties are agreed and the contract is approved, then the next step in
construction project can be proceed.

In construction project, there are few elements that very important. First is the scope of
work in construction project. The scope of work to be completed generally includes the adequate
number of components, contract sizes, meet requires function, meet statutory requirements, and
certificate of completion and compliance. It is important for the contractors to have detail
information of each work that will be done. It is also essential to note what will not be included
in the project. The controlling of cost is compulsery so that the construction project will not
exceed the budget and cause losses. Management of time also plays an important role so that the
project will not delay and can be completed on time. In addition, the quality control must be
practiced in construction project so that the quality of the project can be guaranteed.

For the conclusion, all students need to be exposed with construction project phase during
their study so that they will have some idea on how construction process is done. It will helps the
student to adapt with all works involve in construction when they have employed.
