toric times to the pre-Roman
period: first inhabitants of the
territory of Andorra as in La Bal-
ma de La Margineda, El Cedre in
Santa Coloma or l’Antuix in Es-
caldes-Engordany.
805 - The legend says that Char-
lemagne founded Andorra in
recognition for the help given by
its inhabitants against Saracens.
Mid-9th century - Consecration
of the cathedral of Santa Ma-
ria d’Urgell, the first document
which mentions the parishes of
Andorra as lands of the counts
of Urgell.
1133 - The Count of Urgell gives
the Bishop of Urgell his claim to
the Andorra valleys.
13th century - Constant strug-
gles between the counts of Foix
and the Church of Urgell to un-
dermine the rights of the bi-
shops over Andorra.
1278 and 1288 - The Bishop of
Urgell, Pere d’Urg and the Count
of Foix, Roger Bernat III, signed
the Pareatges. The Pareatges
established the co-sovereignty
of the Bishop of Urgell and the

dorra as we know it today.
1419 - Creation of the Consell de
la Terra (Council of the Land) as

Geography, climate and nature
The Andorran relief is mountainous,
with 72 peaks, some over 2000
m high, which makes Andorra one
of the highest countries in Europe.
The highest point in the territory
is the Comapedrosa peak (2,942
m) and the lowest point is where
the river Runer crosses the frontier
with Spain (838 m). The average
altitude is 1,996 m.
The quaternary origin of the
Andorran land is revealed by the
routes of the main river axes in the
country: the Valira del Nord, the
Valira d’Orient and the Gran Valira.
These rivers are joined by other
tributaries, where the main towns
are located.
The lakes, mainly small and
round, form part of the scenery of
Andorra. Andorra has more than
70 lakes, the largest of which
is the Juclar, which occupies an
area of 21,3 ha, although other
well-known lakes are Tristaina and
Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley
Pessons, amongst others.
The Andorran climate is of Medi-
terranean mountainous type,
with hot summers and cold
winters and considerable
snowfalls. The average minimum
is -2ºC and the maximum 24ºC.
Snowfalls are frequent and the
rain is concentrated mainly in the
months of October and May.
Andorran biodiversity is very rich,
with more than 1,500 species of
flora and fauna spread mainly in
the four zones: Mediterranean,
montane, sub Alpine and Alpine.
Of all the vegetable species,
one stands out, the Poet’s “La
Grandalla” (Narcissus poeticus),
the emblematic flower of the
Principality; amongst the fauna,
the two most representative
animals are the river trout and the
chamois, which live at the highest
points.
The fauna and flora of Andorra vary
depending on the zone. Some of the
most frequent animal species we find
are: the marmot, the ‘pallaresa’ lizard,
the squirrel, the boar and the birds of
prey such as the bearded vulture. Just
like the fauna, the species which form
part of the country’s flora are highly
varied and we can find from medici-
nal herbs (strawberry and ilex), wild
mushrooms and flowers (narcissus)
to a large number of trees and bus-
hes (hazelnut and box).
The biological wealth of Andorra
justifies its preservation, and over
the years different areas have been
protected such as the hunting and
fishing grounds and the nature parks.
The Parc Natural Comunal de les
Valls del Comapedrosa nature
park and the Vall de Sorteny na-
ture park are two protected areas
created with a double intention: on
the one hand the ecosystems are
preserved and on the other a ratio-
nal use is made of them. This is a first
step towards respect of the environ-
ment and the nature of the country.
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley,
declared World Heritage by Unesco
in 2004 for its natural and cultural
wealth, is in the south of the country
and covers 10% of the territory. Given
Bordas (old storehouses) of Setúria
the importance of this area, it is the
only valley in the country in which
vehicles may not enter.
These protected areas and other
valleys of the country, such as the
Incles Valley, of glacial origin; the
Enclar Valley, part of the Anella
Verda (Green Ring) route; the Pes-
sons cirque, The Tristaina Valley,
the Angonella Valley or the Camins

If you like the snow and want
to have a good time, Andorra
invites you to enjoy different
activities to give you new
experiences with your friends,
your partner or with your family.
Young and old can enjoy the
winter sports and a thousand
and one amusements which our
ski resorts offer you.
The Principality has two alpine
skiing and Nordic skiing areas.
Vallnord in La Massana and
Ordino valleys and Grandvalira,
in Canillo and Encamp valleys.
Naturlandia, in La Rabassa forest
in Sant Julià, offers 20 km of Nordic
trails. Vallnord offers over 90 km of
slopes in three sectors: Pal, Arinsal
and Arcalís. Encamp, Canillo, El
Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig and El
Pas de la Casa are entry points to
Grandvalira – the largest skiable
area in the Pyrenees with over 200
km of slopes. Both resorts offer a
wide variety of activities for all ages.
If you like excitement, do not
hesitate to do any of the activities
they offer: jumps, mushing,
snowshoe orientation, adventure
activity centres for all, paragliding
or helicopter flights, without
forgetting the facilities for lovers
of snowboarding: the Freeride
Area and the Snow Park. You will
also have night-time activities,
such as the snowshoe excursions
to enjoy the forests and the full
moon.
Discover Nordic skiing and enjoy
our beautiful scenery over 15
km of trails at Naturlandia. Share
your little ones’ excitement at the
animal park, or enjoy the Airtrekk
sky trail, snow slides, nature class
snowshoe walk, snowmobiles and
quad bikes with friends, among
many other activities. And if that’s
not enough, climb aboard the 5.3
km Tobotronc, the longest alpine
coaster in the world, for amazing
sensations in the heart of nature.
The rest of the year, the three skiing 12
areas in the Principality adapt to

the climate and become the best
stage for numerous, varied open
air activities: adventure circuits and
trekking, quad excursions, karts,
obstacle courses, mountain biking
and free flights are just some of
these activities. The Vallnord Bike
Park and the Grandvalira Mountain
Bike Park stand out for the number
of kilometres for enjoying different
mountain bike routes and levels.
Furthermore, Vallnord (Arcalís
sector), Naturlandia and Grandvalira
(Canillo sector) offer interpretative
and adventure routes for starting
out in the world of orientation.

Places ideal for fishing
Andorra’s lakes and rivers are
incomparable natural areas
for fishing. The season starts
in mid April and continues to
the end of September, and
you must have a licence and
a fishing ground permit to be
able to do this sport. You will

and the grounds in natural
surroundings from the tourist

If you prefer to strike out on your
own, tourist offices stock the
guidebook “Caminos de Andorra”
(Andorra Routes), which contains
information on 54 trails for all
levels. You should also be able
to find the Mapa de Refugios y
Grandes Recorridos de Andorra
(map of mountain huts and long-
distance hiking routes; “GR”), which
provides details of five routes:
the GRP (which goes around the
Principality), the GR-7 and GR-11
(which run across the country) the
cross-border GR, and the ARP (High
Pyrenean Route). It also tells you
where to find 29 mountain refuge
huts, 5 of which are guarded.

Auzat (France) and crosses Andorra
to reach Seu d’Urgell in Spain. A trail
packed with history and culture.

The Principality boasts 3 equestrian
centres, 16 iron ways, 8 climbing
walls, 5 canyons and 8 zones with
more than 200 climbing trails - all
for mountain enthusiasts to enjoy
a unique experience. These sports
and activities can be practised
in almost all parishes. Another
activity that enjoys an ideal
location here is canyoning, which
combines descending rivers and
climbing, and allows you to start
out in this sport in a group or with
the family. All the routes, both
interior and exterior, are suitable
for most people: you’ll truly be able

one with a particular interest
related to nature. A network is to
be generated which, as a whole,
gives an overall view of the
country’s main natural assets.
At each viewpoint we find a sign
with all of the information on
the subject. Informative leaflets
are available in 4 languages at all
tourist offices.
GRP...
Come “round a whole country”
with the GRP (Gran Recorregut
País - Grand Country Route): The
circuit, about 100 km long, has
no difficult or dangerous sections
and crosses the Principality in its
entirety.
It is divided into seven stages,
around 14 km each, designed
on the presence of refuges
and the aim is to take them at
a pace allowing the natural
surroundings to be enjoyed. It
takes six or seven days to finish
the trail. Passports are available
that allow all excursionists
who complete the GRP to
obtain a diploma awarded by
Leisure, sports and health
the Ministry of Tourism and
receive a memento of their
achievement. Both these items
prove that you have managed
to complete this extraordinary
route.
Go around the country on a
mountain bike...
Lovers of the sport have three large
areas especially prepared and
fitted out: the Bike Park Soldeu
and the Vallnord Bike Park. And
in Arinsal you will find the BMX –
Four Cross Circuit, free access and
without charge. You will also have
mountain paths which you are
free to enjoy by bike; you will find
all of the information you need at
the tourist offices in each parish.

at varying levels of difficulty. In
total, there are around 200 km

Museums and monuments:
Andorra’s museums and monu-
ments have a well-defined
common objective: to share
the country’s historical and
cultural heritage. 17 museum
infrastructures will bring visitors
closer to Andorra’s traditions
and folklore; discover, for
example, Andorra’s political
structure by visiting the Casa de
la Vall, Europe’s smallest former
parliament building. Visitors will
be acquainted with the traditions
and beliefs surrounding the
Basilica Nostra Senyora de
Meritxell, which became part of
the Mariana Route in 2014. The
Mariana Route focuses on sites
of cultural and religious interest,
linking the sanctuaries of El Pilar,
Torreciudad, Lourdes, Meritxell
and Montserrat – a trail of
faith guided by spirituality and
Marian devotion, possessing
great wealth in terms of tourism,
patrimony, nature, gastronomy
and culture. Alternatively,
you could also visit the Farga
Rossell (restored forge),

Engordany Art Centre will bring

PassMuseu is an interesting, easy
and money-saving way to discov-
er Andorra’s museums.
The passport costs 2.5 € (taxes incl.)
and allows you a 50% discount on
the admission price for three mu-
seums of choice among the 17 cur-
rently operating in Andorra.
The PassMuseu also includes a
brief description of all the availa-
ble museums in Andorra.
Present the passport at the mu-
seum ticket office in order to
avail of the discount. Remember,
each passport is personal and
non-transferable and each cou-
pon is valid for a particular mu-
seum. Each museum will stamp
your passport in validation.
The PassMuseu is valid for a peri-
od of one year from the purchase
date and is only valid for listed
museums. We recommend prior
reservation for all museums.

Romanesque art
The pre-Romanesque and
Romanesque art are the artistic
manifestations that have lasted
longest in the Principality,
while other architectural styles
have been imposed in other
places of Europe. The Andorran
Romanesque is expressed in small
buildings identified as the centre
of spiritual and community life in
the villages of the past, and tell us
today about the formation of the
parish communities and the first
power relationships.

The Roman Andorra Interpreta-
tion Centre, in the village of Pal,
offers visitors an introduction to
the influence of Roman art in An-
dorran valleys from the moment
of its conception as an art form up
until the end of the 12th century.
The country’s Romanesque
churches are characterised as small
constructions with sober decora-
tion of great beauty and harmony;
there is a predominance of Lom-
bardian decoration in the most
emblematic churches in the coun-
try, which jealously guard their
mural paintings inside. You will
find more than 40 Romanesque
churches in the most singular plac-
es of our cultural scenery.
La Margineda archaeological site
The site opened in summer 2012,
and aims to show visitors the re-
sult of six digs that have revealed
one of the most important medi-
eval sites documented in Andorra
to date.

Culture trails
The charms of each valley and

Festivals, traditions and celebrations
Andorra preserves the customs and
traditions that our predecessors
preserved century by century and
which we have as a legacy today.
Andorran folklore is shown in the
dances and the popular festivals
which follow each other throughout
the year, as well as the main religious
celebrations such as the Canòlich
procession the last Saturday in May
and the feast of Our Lady of Meritxell,
the patron saint of Andorra, on 8th
September. These celebrations are a
unique opportunity to see the great
variety of fun and leisure activities
and events in the country.
Saint John’s Bonfire Eve
In Andorra during the celebrations
of the summer’s solstice, June
23rd. at night, fire lit big balls
are made to spin at high speed,
creating a balls of fire visual effect.
The fire festivities to celebrate
the incoming summer are usual
practice on the villages and towns
of both sides of the Pyrenees. It is
a very old tradition, which origins
are lost in time, but aside its origins,
the Saint John’s Bonfire festivities

for any nationality. However,
as it is necessary to go either
through Spain or France to get
to Andorra, all nationals from
countries not in the Schengen
area must check at home
whether they need a multiple
entry visa to enter or leave the
countries that form part of the
Schengen area and be able to
get to Andorra. The type of Visa
will depend on the country of
origin of the visitor, although
the most common is usually the
double or multiple entry visa.
