Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiners
comments should be in GREEN ink.
The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component
CET B: Assignment table.
If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

problem statement/exercise/question
PART A
A1
Engine characteristics serve the developers, designers and users of internal combustion
engines as important aids in designing the fundamental dimensions, assessing engine power
and consumption, and evaluating and comparing different engines. A distinction is made
between engine characteristics such as stroke, bore, piston displacement , compression ratio
and operating characteristics such as power, torque, engine speed, mean pressure,
volumetric efficiency, brake thermal efficiency and fuel consumption.

Performance of an internal combustion engine depends only on Brake

thermal efficiency
With reference to the above debate on the statement with a relevant supporting
data and references considering the following:
1.1 List the factors which affects the engine performance
1.2 Discuss on the above with reference to the performance curves
1.3 I C Engines Pollution
1.4 Justification for Stance taken with a relevant case study

PART B
B.1
Conduct the performance test using the gasoline engine test rig for different parameters and
determine the following
1.1 Thermal efficiency of the engine
1.2 Compare the performance of two stroke with four stroke engine
1.3 Draw the characteristic curve of the engines.
1.4 Comment on the results obtained
(Consult the course leader for different input parameter for testing)
B.2

M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences

Private University Established in Karnataka State by Act No. 15 of 2013

Conduct the performance test using the diesel engine test rig for different parameters and
determine the following
2.1
2.2
2.3
2.4

Thermal efficiency of the engine

Draw the characteristic curve of the engines.
Compare the performance of diesel with gasoline engine
Comment on the results obtained
(Consult the course leader for different input parameter for testing)

B3.
The compressors used for compressing air are called air compressors. Compressors are
invariably used for all applications requiring high pressure air. Compressors are supplied
with low pressure air (or any fluid) at inlet which comes out as high pressure air (or any fluid)
at outlet. Work required for increasing pressure of air is available from the prime mover
driving the compressor. Generally, electric motor, internal combustion engine or steam
engine, turbine etc. are used as prime movers.
Conduct and determine the following for a multi stage air compressor test rig.
3.1 Pressure ratio, Volumetric efficiency
3.2 Draw a P-v diagram for the state points
3.3 Comment on the influencing parameters for the performance
(Consult the Course leader for the data)
B4
Some of popular applications of compressors are, for driving pneumatic tools and air
operated equipment, spray painting, compressed air engine, supercharging, surface
cleaning, refrigeration and air conditioning, chemical industry etc.
4.1 Select an application of compressed air
4.2 List and explain available compressors suitable for the selected applications
4.3 Suggest an appropriate compressor with justifications
