Step 1

Detailed Survey and Alignment

Check Points for detailed survey and
alignment are:
Route Alignment
Profile Plotting
Tower Spotting

Check Survey

Check Points for check survey for tower location are:

Bisection of angle / accuracy of alignment

Check for profile levels and electrical & other clearances.

Check for span marking and lengths

Check for tower type and position as per site conditions.

Estimation of benching and revetment volumes (as per site conditions)

Final profile and tower schedule.

Step 2

Why is Soil Investigation done?

Soil investigation is necessary to ascertain the
Engg., properties of soil, since the soil profile is
not uniform throughout our country.
Foundation transfers load from the structure to the
underlying earth crust which is arbitrarily classified
as Rock and Soil.
The load transfer to the soil is dependant upon the
bearing capacity of the soil.
In essence all investigation is to determine the
bearing capacity of the soil/rock

Soil Investigation
As per Field Quality
Plan, checks on soil
investigation have to be
carried out as given
below:
Bore Log
Depth of Bore Log
SPT Test
Collection of samples

Step 3

Step 4

Foundations
The tower foundations cost approx. 10
percent of overall cost of tower, or 5
percent of the cost of transmission
depending on the type of soil.
The major components of to be checked
the foundation stage are:

to 15
lines,

Concrete Cube Test

Three samples of 15 cm x 15 cm x 15 cm
cube for 28 days compressive strength for
all concrete works except pile foundation
work shall be taken.
For pile foundation works, six cubes, three
for 7 days testing and balance three for 28
days testing shall be taken.

Step 4

Tower Erection
Activity that starts next to the completion
of foundation.
This activity normally starts after 14days of
the foundation completion to allow the
curing time of concrete.

Step 5

Line Stringing
Stringing the line, involves the following four operations:
Stringing the pilot line to haulage the conductor
Running out the conductors from reels
Pulling up the conductors to correct sag and tension
Tying off

Conductor should always be paid out from rotating reels

or some similar rotating device. To speed up the work,
and wherever the topography permits it, the conductor is
paid out from the rotating reels mounted on truck. This
will minimize the possibility of damaging the conductor
by dragging it over fences, rocks, etc.
