Dear President,

In just one year, 800 African Americans lives were taken by our police force. That is
almost 100 people a month. Plus the people who are not killed but are harassed by a police
officers. Our constitution states that the government is to ensure domestic Tranquility, provide
for the common defence, promote the general Welfare... Domestic Tranquility means peace
among and within the United States. Common defence means protecting the U.S and ALL of its
citizens. When our law enforcement isnt doing their just duty, lives are put at stake, specifically
black lives.
The Washington Post states, However, black men accounted for 40 percent of the 60
unarmed deaths, even though they make up just 6 percent of the U.S. population. This data
clearly shows us that there is a pattern. How could so many black men be killed when in the
whole scheme of the U.S theres not as many as another race. Its clear to many that they are
being targeted by officers. Of course this would cause a lot of outbreak and anger. This situation
makes me upset, and Im not even black. I cant imagine what it must feel like to someone who
IS being fired upon. I thought discrimination was over? Have we made no progress since the
Civil Rights Movement. To me, it doesnt matter if Im directly affected or not, these people are
just as important as you and I. I think that if these statistics are clearly voiced then the
government should be taking action. Our government clearly knows about what is happening but
hasnt done anything since the first event causing the uprise, the shooting of Michael Brown in
2014. Or Tamir Rice in 2015. What about Philando Castile just earlier this year? Shot in front of
his own girlfriend while she was recording. This has been happening for 2 years and obviously
nothing has changed. Even just simple measures can reassure safety to the population, especially
black males. Its black males that we see a pattern where it is inequitable. Especially when the
people doing it arent being punished, but rather gifted a paid leave.
If our authorities are supposed to be reassuring our safety how come a whole race is
frightened instead of feeling protected? If this is not addressed the problem and backlash will
only continue to grow as more and more people become aware and upset. Even such a simple
approach where officers must take a social justice or racial profiling class. To add on, if an
officer is to do something like this, let there be a consequence. Otherwise youre showing the
people this is not a serious topic, which it is. Our constitution starts by saying We the people
meaning no matter who you are, we are all equal. If we continue to single out different groups of
people, this will only create a war within when we should all be coming together to create the
best country for everyone.
