1 Overview
Knowledge Points
To understand CNA's characteristics
To understand CNA's version release process

1.1 CNA1 Product Characteristics

1.

Supports various Air Interface Protocols, and provides a smooth evolution plan
from 2G to 3G.
Currently, this software supports the CDMA IS95A/B, cdma2000 1xRTT, 1xEVDO and WCDMA Protocols, as well as CDMA-based GoTa Trunking
Communication System Protocol established by ZTE.

2.

Integrated data analysis function

CNA1 can load and merge test data that is obtained through the test software of
multiple manufacturers. It can also conduct the conjoint analysis with
background OMC-R test data, background performance data as well as
simulated data. In this way, the software can simultaneously analyze forward
and reverse links as well as verifying the performance index difference between
actual network and initial simulation design.

3.

High-performance geographic analysis function

CNA1 combines the high-performance real-time geographic rendering engine
and universal GIS engine so that it can execute the artistic and real-time
geographic display while occupying extremely little computer resources. The
geographic display supports display of the base station information. It can
automatically associate the neighbor information and BTS and cell data in real
time, draw the connecting lines between neighbors, geographically display call
events, and conduct the failure analysis. It also supports the MapInfo map
format and the geography navigation function.

4.

Rich graphical association analysis function

1

The display modes of two-dimensional electronic form, diagram of curves, stick

plot and pie chart provide various means on analyzing network performance
indexes for users, and the data from different analysis windows can be
associated.
5.

Synchronous play function

Users can examine all wireless parameters and air interface signaling of the
network in identical time through the synchronous function, and replay the
whole test procedure through the play function.

6.

Signaling analysis function

Supports the functions of browsing, filtering and setting colors for air interface
messages. It can analyze and measure call events and handoff events. It can also
analyze user-defined events, enabling users to quickly know the network state
and locate the network fault through a combination of the signaling flow and
statistical result. Moreover, the software also supports rich access delay analysis
function, which helps to deeply analyze the access performance of the wireless
network.

7.

Pilot analysis and diagnosis function

Supports various featured pilot pollution analysis algorithm as well as lacking
and adding adjacent area algorithm. The algorithms help users to quickly locate
the pilot pollution and the lacking and adding neighbor phenomenon existing in
the network, and carry out the Ec/Io coverage rendering analysis of the specified
cells and base station, and also carry out the strongest Ec/Io coverage rendering
analysis.

8.

Data service processing function

Through CNA1, user can analyze the data service throughput at each link layer
of data services, including PPP, IP, TCP, UDP and FTP throughout. It also
supports the analysis of Iperf data and PPP setup delay data, which provides
various methods for users to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the
data services in the network .

9.

Data pretreatment function

Because of the instability during test as well as the error caused by GPS locking,
the software supports the functions of fast fading processing to primary signals
2

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

as well as the data processing on system error, accidental error and remov ing
aggregation effect to GPS information, which reflects the statistics rule of
wireless network performance more really and objectively.
10. Report query and statistics function
For the query function that is based on the advanced SQL statements, users can
customize query conditions. The users then can query radio parameters based on
one or a combination of query conditions, and then displays the result
geographically. In addition, the software supports the data measurement
functions of original, Bin Block, specified physiographic area and specified time
segment, and export the statistical data into the defined report template.
Statistics of multiple events and delays can be measured and the report can be
outputted..

1.2 ZXPOS CNA1 Module Composition

There are three general pilot pollution algorithms as follows:

Algorithm 1 (Algorithm1, hereafter referred to as GPPA1): When the pilot
number of Ec/Io that is bigger than X1 is not smaller than the threshold n,
namely it expresses that there is pilot pollution, X1 default is -15dB, under
CDMA95 system n default is 4, and under CDMA2000 1x system n default is 5.
Algorithm 2 (Algorithm2, hereafter referred to as GPPA2): When the pilot
number of Ec/Io between [X3, X2] is bigger than or equal to threshold m,
namely it indicates that there is pilot pollution, X2 default is -15dB, X3 default
is -17dB, under CDMA95 system m default is 3, and under CDMA2000 1x
system m default is 4.
Comprehensive algorithm (hereafter referred to as GPPA1+A2): Combine
14

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

GPPA1 with GPPA2, and its judgment condition is:

Max(PNCount (Ec/Io>X1), PNCount(X3<=Ec/Io<=X2)+X4)>=n , and X4
default is n-m=1.
After the analysis, the following information is increased under each drive test
point, and its corresponding information may be examined through Show Table
button on Map window.
(1) To satisfy the pilot number and pilot information of GPPA1;
(2) To satisfy the pilot number and pilot information of GPPA2;
(3) To satisfy the pilot number and pilot information of GPPA1+A2.
Then make each kind of analysis to the pilot number, to obtain the pilot
pollution situation.

There are two special pilot pollution algorithms (ZTEs patent algorithm), including
three analysis forms:
Algorithm 1 (Algorithm1, hereafter referred to as SPPA1): If RxPower>X1, Best
Ec/Io<X2 namely indicates that there is pilot pollution (under the circumstance of
suppressing interference). X1 default is -100dBm (i.e. coverage area), and X2 default is
-14dB.
Algorithm 2 (Algorithm1, hereafter referred to as SPPA2): When the pilot number of
Ec/Io>X3 is bigger than X4, and the pilot strength of X6 or above X6 is equivalent
(PNCount (deltaEc/Io<=X5) >=X6), namely it indicates that there is pilot pollution. X3
default is -15dB; under CDMA95 system X4 default is 3, under CDMA2000 1x system
X4 should be set as 4; X5 default is 2dB; X6 X6<=X4+1. SPPA2 is the most accurate
special pilot pollution algorithm.
After the analysis, the following information is increased under each drive test point:
(1) SPPA1: When satisfying it is 1; otherwise it is 0;
(2) To satisfy the pilot information of SPPA1;
(3) SPPA2: When satisfying it is 1; otherwise it is 0;
(4) To satisfy the pilot information of SPPA2;
(5) To satisfy SPPA1 and SPPA2 simultaneously: (when satisfying SPPA1 it is 1,
when satisfying SPPA2 it is 2, when simultaneously satisfying it is 3, and in
other time it is 0);
(6) To satisfy the pilot information of SPPA1 and SPPA2 simultaneously.

The principle of CDMA Lacking & Adding Neighboring Area Algorithm: In the
process of drive test, the mobile station gets the neighboring area list from base
station, but PNScanner executes the measurement of frequency sweep
(measurement mode is related to PNScaners Pilot Inc setting) to 512 PNs
continually, and records its Ec/Io. If discovering some PN does not exist in the
neighboring area list, but its intensity actually surpasses threshold X1 (default
17

Software Tools_CNA

value is -13dB), simultaneously, the FER of forward basic channel also

surpasses the threshold X2 (default value is 0, namely neglecting FER factor),
then this PN is thought of as lacking & adding neighboring area.

At present the system has realized two kinds of WCDMA general pilot pollution
algorithms (GPPA1 and GPPA2).
GPPA1: When the pilot number of Ec/Io that is bigger than Tp is bigger than N,
it is thought that there is pilot pollution. The N value is related to the activation
set size, and generally should be bigger than the latter.
GPPA2: If the pilot number of Ec/Io between Tp and Ta is bigger than N, it is
thought that there is pilot pollution. After considering the situation of Tp>Ta,
namely it is bigger than the activation set threshold, but the number of pilot
cannot enter the activation set is excessively many, the reason that cannot enter
the activation set is the activation set is full or the admission control.

side of ZXPOS CNA1 main interface, as shown in Figure 2.5 2.

26

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

Figure 2.5-2 Explorer Tree Interface

Explorer Tree's root node name is Workspace, and main branch nodes are each
kind of data table nodes and site information file nodes, of which the data table
nodes contain four data types:
(1) CDMA 1x Data Tables

Phone Table.

Message Table.

PN Scanner Table: Including five PNScanner data tables of Peak Ec/Io, Peak Ec,
Aggregate Ec/Io, Aggregate Ec and Delay.

OMSRFER Table: Reverse FER table of OMC-R test.

service.

2 If the software has completed before loading the data, the data merge interface
will pop up firstly, as shown in Figure 2.5 3.

Figure 2.5-3 File Merge Option

At present ZXPOS CNA1 supports five merge modes, for the merge rule please
see Figure 2.5-4 and following text description: (In order to describe
conveniently, the loaded file and file to load are hereafter referred to as A
and B respectively)

28

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

Figure 2.5-4 File Merge Schematic Diagram

(1) Replace (No Merge): Namely replace loaded file A with file B to load, after the
merge only file B are left.
(2) Additional merge: For the data layer that both A and B have, if there is no time
overlapping, add the record in B to the front or behind of corresponding layer in
A, if there is time overlapping, the merge is unable to execute.
(3) Brutal Merge: Namely insert all records in B to A in chronological order.
Regarding the file without time overlapping, this merge is equal to
additionalmerge; regarding the data with time overlapping, sometimes this
merge way does not have practical significance, but may guarantee the data
integrity, which needs to pay attention while using.
(4) Selective Merge: Only add the data in B without time overlapping to A, the time
overlapping part in B will be discarded.
29

Software Tools_CNA

(5) Time-offset Merge: Namely execute a whole offset to all data time in B, causing
B and A no longer overlap in time, then executes Additional Merge to two data.
Under this merge mode, may set the time offset of B data through parameter
Auto Offset and Fix Offset. Auto Offset indicates that all data in B offset to the
behind of last data in A, both time differences is 1s, Fix Offset is the time offset
of data in B, which user assigns.
Moreover, Figure 2.5-3 also has three check options:
Select Merge Mode Automatically: Namely adopt different merge modes automatically
according to time overlapping situation, if there is no time overlapping use Additional
Merge; if there is no time overlapping use Time-offset Merge, at this time may also set
time offset parameter Auto Offset and Fix Offset.
Report merge result: For example, Figure 2.5-5.

Figure 2.5-5 Report Merge Result

Apply to all files: All current files to load use the same merge mode.
After setting merge mode and clicking on <Load> button, the software starts to load
the data; if clicking <Skip> button, will jump over the current data file without loading.

2.6 Fast Data Interchange Format Support

Click [FileSave As] in ZXPOS CNA1 main menu, may save all current test data
loaded by ZXPOS CNA1 as ZXPOS CNA1 special interchange formatted data, and the
file extension name is zrx.
Compared with apt, sd5 and other drive test data, zrx data file occupies small space,
has quick load speed, moreover does not lose information basically, therefore, it is a
good choice to use zrx formatted file to take the data source of CNA1.
30

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

2.7 Workspace Management

The workspace of ZXPOS CNA1 records the loaded software data and opened window
information, and these information may be saved to workspace file (*.zrw). By using
the workspace file, you may customize some data and window combinations, and only
need to open a workspace file to auto load the data, open the window, greatly
improving work efficiency.

2.7.1 Save Workspace As

The function of custom event analysis is to supply a interface for users, which could
judge event state through setting the logical condition among messages. Its interface is
as shown in Figure 2.11-8.
1.

The edit box on the upper left corner is the current event.

2.

The list box on the lower left corner is the list of all custom events.

3.

Condition with Message is the judgment conditions for the various states of

current events. There are three states, each state corresponds to a message list, and
each message list should at least have one message.
Start: Indicating the event has started, its message list is Start Messages. As long as
there appears one in the Start Messages, it means the event has started. If it receives the
message again later and the ARQ is the same, that it means repeat.

76

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

Figure 2.11-8 Message Analysis WindowCustom Event Analysis

Success: Indicating the event has succeeded, its message list is Success Messages.
After the Start state begun, if it has received one message in the Success Messages,
then it means the event has succeeded.
Fail: Indicating the event has failed, its message list is Fail Messages. After the Start
state, if it has received one message in the Fail Messages instead of Success Messages,
then it means the event has failed.
Timer: indicating timer, it could set its time T in the edit box behind. After T seconds of
the Start condition, if it has not yet received the message in the Success Messages, it
can be determined that the event has timed out, then the user can further determine
whether it is the failure event.
<Edit> buttons mean that the message list could be edited, including operations such as
adding, deleting and so on.
4.

The functions of the buttons on the right side are as follows:

(1) Add: To add a custom event.

(2) Rename: To rename the current custom event.
(3) Save As: To save as the current custom event.
(4) Delete: To delete the current custom event.
(5) Statistics: To compile statistics according to the judgment conditions of the
77

current custom events, and display the results in the muddle below list box.
5.

In the middle list box of statistical results, right-clicking on a particular status on

the first column, it will pop-up the context menu.

Find First Selected Custom Event: To find and locate the message that the custom
event occurs first in the message list window.
Find Next Selected Custom Event: To find and locate the message that the custom
event occurs next in the message list window.

Knowledge Points
Master the CAN Common Advanced Analysis Methods
ZXPOS CNA1 advanced analysis functions mainly include: pilot analysis function,
PPP link delay analysis function, Iperf data analysis function, GPS error handling, fast
fading handling functions. This Chapter will introduce these functions in detail.

4.1 Pilot Analysis Function

The most distinctive advanced analysis function in ZXPOS CNA1 is the pilot analysis
function. This section takes the Phone Table data of cdma 2000 1x as an example, other
protocol pilot analysis functions are similar.

4.1.1 One PN Ec/Io Analysis

This function has two modes:
1.

PNs EcIo is best (the strongest coverage rendering of one PN)

(1) Select Phone Table and PNs EcIo is best in NBList in pull-down boxes on
the top of Map window, at this time PN to Find input box could be edited.
(2) Filling PN value into the PN to Find input box and then clicking on <Go>, you
could view different PN's EcIo is best in NBList situations, that if Best PN of
one PN in the test route is the same as the PN value in "PN to Find" input box, the
point will be displayed, and section statistics will be implemented according to
corresponding legend, you could get the strongest coverage range rendering map
of this PN.

4.1.4 Pilot Pollution Analysis

Before implementing pilot pollution analysis, it needs to defined pilot pollution
algorithms through

button. There are three kinds of general pilot pollution

algorithms and two kinds of special pilot pollution algorithms with three
manifestations, so ZXPOS CNA1 supports six kinds of pilot pollution algorithms as
shown in Figure 4.1-5. The detailed algorithm description could refer to the description
in Section 2.3.

4.1.5 Lacking & Adding Neighboring Area Analysis

We collect data on mobile phone and PNScanner at the same time when we're doing
drive test. The phone can only detect the Ec/Io of neighboring area PN, while the
PNScanner is scanning 512 PNs (related to the Pilot Inc setting of PNScanner) and
recording its Ec/Io; Therefore, at a particular data point, when a PN is not in the
neighboring area list, while PNScanner can detect the Ec/Io of this one PN, if the Ec/Io
of this one PN is large to a certain level, interference will occur, and this PN is the
lacking & adding neighboring area PN.
If the frame errors of this data point exceed a certain threshold, that is, that the frame
errors are caused by lacking & adding neighboring area.
Figure 4.1-8 shows the lacking & adding neighboring area situation. The lacking &
adding neighboring area number is denoted by different color. Firstly, click the
135

Software Tools_CNA

button on the toolbar, and then click trajectory point through arrow tool, software will
connect current point to corresponding lacking & adding neighboring area with a
straight line and show PN information of lacking & adding neighboring area on this
line: PN value, EcIo, the distance between this point and lacking & adding neighboring
area.

4.3 Iperf Data Analysis

Iperf is free software for data business test, and its record process is as follows: iperf-c
issues the TCP packet, iperf-s receives the packet, sends confirmation, implements
statistics, and then writes the flow information to a text file, but the recorded data does
not contain the time point information while recording.
Click the menu [ToolIperf Curve Analysis] in the main interface of ZXPOS CNA1,
and open the Iperf data analysis window, its ordinate is APP (application layer) speed
(unit is Kbps) and its abscissa is time, as shown in Figure 4.3-1 Iperf Data Analysis

with the window shown in Figure 4.3-2 Iperf Parameter Setup Window. There are two
methods:
1.

User could input the start time of Iperf data in the Input Time edit box.

2.

User could select the time of the first record in one table as the start time

according to memory data table that already exists.

4.4 Drive Test Data Locating Precision Amendment

In the actual road test, because of the GPS performance or failure and other reasons,
the latitude and longitude information of some data points in the drive test data is not
accurate enough or even wrong. GPS often exists accidental error and system error, and
even the latitude and longitude aggregation. Accidental error: because GPS does not
lock satellite or fails and other reasons, the reported latitude and longitude values are
apparent anomalous. Systematic error: It is often due to GPS device performance
problems, the reported latitude and longitude values appear fixed error. Longitude and
latitude aggregation: It is generally due to the GPS sampling frequency is much lower
than the test software sampling frequency, resulting in a large number of test data
points with the same latitude and longitude value, and it appears aggregation in
geographic location. ZXPOS CNA1 drive test data locating precision amendment
function could amend aforementioned problems through certain algorithms, so that the
139

Software Tools_CNA

amended data are more realistic.

Click the menu [ToolsGPS Error Handle...] to open the GPS Data Amendment
window as shown in the following figure.

(4) Y offset: Y axis offset distance; its unit is meter or degree.
4.

Special Aggregate

(1) Eliminate GPS Special Aggregate: whether to eliminate aggregation.

(2) Max Velocity: the maximum car velocity, its unit is Km/h.
(3) Max Adjust Distance: The maximum adjust distance and its unit is meter. If the
adjusted distance is great than this setting value, then it take this distance as adjust
terminal to avoid distortion caused by over-adjustment.
(4) Basal Hypothesis: The elimination aggregate mode, currently only for fixed
velocity.
5.

OK button: Save the amended parameters and exit.

6.

Cancel button: Exit directly.

7.

4.7 Pilot Pollution Instances

Take Inner Mongolia Chifeng C network for example, we test in the urban area and
propose optimization solution for West Bridge multi-pilot area.
The test devices are ZTE network optimization test software ZXPOS CNT1 and
analysis software ZXPOS CNA1, G218 test phone, GPS and accessory devices,
notebook and so on. The test method adopts continuous long-call. Drive test software
records the RxPwr, TxPwr, Ec/Io, FFER, Tx_Adj and so on. Analysis software carries
out post-processing analysis for data.
The following figure shows the main base stations in the urban area of Chifeng.

4.7.1 Pilot Pollution Area Amendment Solution

Combining with optimization theory and a number of examples and experience, we
conclude the following commonly used and feasible amendment solutions to optimize
the pilot pollution areas.

Solution One: Adding base stations in the pilot pollution areas

Solution one is a method commonly used in project, its principle is: Based on link
budget formula, the path loss of the new base station pilot is far smaller than the
original cell pilot which generates pilot pollution, therefore, its power is significantly
larger than that other pilots, the new base station will naturally be the main server cell
of mobile stations. Due to the introduction of new base stations, other cells Io
increases significantly and Ec/Io decreases correspondingly, pilot pollution problems
will be solved.
This solution's weaknesses are: The construction period is relatively longer and it will
bring a certain amount of trouble to the PN planning. If the PN resource of each base
station cluster is reserved in accordance with the requirements at the initial planning,
then a small amount of new base stations will not cause problems to the PN
distribution, but it will be a little troublesome when planning. If it is not reserved in
accordance with the requirements at the planning beginning, the PN distribution of new
base stations will be complex.
However, this solution can add base station be a way through the cell splitting. From
the long-term view, it is a more effective method for sharing traffic and resolving
coverage.

Solution Two: Adjust the antenna-feed system parameters.

Adjustments could include: antenna azimuth and downtilt angle, the antenna-feed cable
type and length, antenna type and so on. To reduce the sector power when reaching the
pilot pollution area, it could adjust the antenna downtilt angle in most cases. If it
adjusts the downtilt angle of two sectors herein (increase the downtilt angle) to reduce
the transmitting power in pilot pollution area, then their Ec/Io will reduce
correspondingly. Since their power is reduced, the total Io is also reduced. Therefore,
the Ec/Io of the remaining two sectors will be improved to a certain extent; and this
will resolve the pilot pollution problem to a certain extent. Similarly, if it adjusts the
146

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

downtilt angle of two sectors herein (reduce the downtilt angle) to improve the
transmitting power in pilot pollution area, then their Ec/Io will be improved
correspondingly. When the total Io increases, the remaining two sectors Ec/Io will
reduce correspondingly in natural. Of course, the antenna tilt adjustable range is not
great. As for pilot pollution problem caused by the across-boundary coverage of high
station in urban area, if it is a mechanical antenna, the antenna can be replaced by
electronic antenna with electrical downtilt. It will control the sector coverage by
increasing the antenna downtilt angle to achieve the purpose of improving pilot
polluted areas.
Adjust appropriately the antenna azimuth to reduce (or increase) the signal power of
the sector in pollution areas, and then increase the gap of each base station sectors
signal power in pilot pollution areas, so it can achieve the purpose of pilot pollution
elimination.
Adjustment of the antenna azimuth and downtilt angle is a more effective optimization
method, the resilience is smaller and the impact on the system is relatively smaller. In
practical application, it could adjust the antenna azimuth, downtilt angle and antenna
height at the same time according to specific circumstances, but it should consider
comprehensively the impact of base stations around adjustment areas. It could use the
planning software with excellent algorithms and high accuracy for optimization and
simulation to adopt the best adjustment solution.

Solution Three: Adjust the base station sector transmitting power. It will generate one
or two main server pilot through reducing the transmitting power of the weakest sector.
If reducing the power of one sector herein, then its Io reaching mobile station in pilot
pollution area will reduce, the other pilots Ec/Io will be improved correspondingly
without power adjustment. Thus, it will increase the gap of four PN Ec/Io values in
activation set; thereby it will remove the sector signal, whose power has been reduced,
from the mobile station activation set, and then it will achieve the purpose of pilot
pollution elimination. Similarly, if it increases the transmitting power of one or two
sectors to improve Ec/Io from these two sectors to mobile station, then the total Io will
increase, so Ec/Io from the other sectors to mobile station will reduce, and it will also
eliminate pilot pollution. It should consider comprehensively the impact of base
stations around adjustment areas when adjusting the transmitting power of base station
sector. Because it will expand the sector forward coverage range at the same of
147

Software Tools_CNA

increasing sector transmitting power; and it will narrow the sector forward coverage
range at the same of reducing sector transmitting power.

Solution Four: Handoff parameter and channel gain adjustment. Through appropriately
adjusting the system handoff threshold (such as elevating T_ADD threshold), so that it
will make some cell Ec/Io not meet the conditions of reaching into the activation set
thereby eliminating the pilot pollution. It could control the pilot signal coverage range
through adjusting the base station cell channel gain to achieve the purpose of
eliminating the pilot pollution. However, in general the system parameters can not
easily be adjusted, because this will have a huge impact for whole system's
performance. There are few adjustments even in the initial stage of network building.
Here is described the theoretical feasibility, it is not easy to use in practice.

4.7.2 Instance Resolution Process and Effect

West Bridge multi-pilot area belongs to the area covered by Songshan Agricultural
Bank sector, Motor Trade Company sector and Common Plastic Factory sector.
Through the special pilot pollution analysis function of the ZXPOS CNA1 analysis
software, it calculates the pilot information meeting the SPPA2 condition in the target
area, as shown in the following table:

It adopts the Solution Two of the four aforementioned solutions in this case.
148

Chapter 4 CNA's Advanced Analysis Functions

It analyzes the coverage situation of Songshan Agricultural Bank sector by ZXPOS

CNA1 analysis software and finds that, the sector covered radius is smaller as the
sector antenna pitch angle is larger, so it does not meet the desired coverage target. The
adjustment increases its coverage radius by reducing the pitch angle of the sector, while
adjusts its azimuth without affecting the whole coverage in the direction of the main
lobe, making the main lobe direction near the target area and improving the target area
coverage. At the same time, it analyzes the coverage situation of Motor Trade
Company sector and Common Plastic Factory sector and adjusts their pitch angles
correspondingly.
Considering various relevant factors comprehensively, in order to improve the
coverage situation of the target area and improve call quality, it carries out the
following adjustments for antenna-feed of relevant base station cells.

Through the implementation of the above adjustment solution, and now the pilot
pollution in the target region has been eliminated, call quality is good, and it does not
have a negative impact on the surrounding area. Geographic Analysis Diagram
