Course Description
Advanced Combustion theory (ACT) is a major technology fundamental course for the
graduate students major in mechanical engineering and automation, thermal energy
and power engineering, industrial engineering, nuclear science and engineering,
aeronautics and astronautics engineering and vehicle engineering, deepening the
knowledge learned in combustion theory. This course is also a core major course for
graduate students major in mechanical engineering, propulsion technology and
thermal energy and power engineering.
Advanced Combustion theory (ACT) consists of combustion chemical
thermodynamics and chemical kinetics, liquid droplet vaporization and combustion,
turbulence premixed flame, turbulence non-premixed flame, heterogeneous
combustion, knocking combustion, soot and NOx formation mechanisms in
combustion, combustion frontiers and class discussion. By learning this course,
students should understand the basic fundamentals and analysis methods of the
complicated combustion phenomenon, and have the capability to analyze the
combustion problems in engine and boiler combustion phenomenon and knocking
phenomenon and etc. Students also need to master the fundamentals of conversion
from fuel chemical energy to thermal energy, deeply understand the effects of flame
velocity, thickness and other factors on combustion.
Textbook
The PO 6001 course draws material primarily from the following textbooks

Kefa Cen, Qiang Yao, Zhongyang Luo, Xuntian Li. Advanced combustion.
Zhejiang University Press, 2003 (could be borrowed from SJTU library)

Stephen R. Turne, An introduction to combustion: concepts and applications, 2th

ed, Tsinghua University Press, 2009.

Irvin Glassman. Combustion (4th Edition)

Course Pre-requisites
Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Combustion Theory
Course Learning Objectives:
Advanced Combustion Theory is a subject studying the fuel chemical energy
conversion to thermal energy. Students should have capability in analyzing and
solving simple combustion model problems, setting fundamental foundation for
taking relevant technology jobs, research jobs and management jobs. Students
should possess general understanding of the combustion phenomenon in engine,
boiler, rocket propulsion and fire, and also be capable of conducting some simple
calculation and providing explanation in microscopic scale. For example, towards
problems such as engine knocking and high soot emissions, students could establish
simplified model to obtain solution. The combustion frontier lectures given by invited
combustion experts could let students learn about the hot research projects, and
pave the way for students who are willing to take combustion relevant engineering
work, scientific research or open some new fields. On the other hand, this course
could strengthen students capability in literature reading, scientific article writing
and academic report. (A2A3A5B2B3)
Advanced Combustion Theory (ACT) consists of combustion fundamentals, laminar
flame, liquid droplet vaporization and combustion, turbulence premixed flame,
turbulence non-premixed flame, solid fuel combustion, knocking combustion, soot
and NOx formation mechanisms in combustion, combustion frontiers and class
discussion. By learning this course, students should understand combustion
phenomenon, and combustion related problems, and how the experts solve the
combustion problems in relevant fields. Students should have the analysis capability

for combustion phenomenon and combustion problems in engine, turbine, boiler

and other devices.
Teaching
Teaching is implemented mainly by class lectures, but also with comprehensive
discussion, assignments and lectures invited from other colleges.
The core guarantee to achieve teaching objective is the text book. This course
employs Advanced Combustion Theory written by Cen, Kefa from Zhejiang
University and An introduction to combustion: concepts and applications by
Stephen R. Turns as textbooks. The reference book is Combustion by Irvin
Glassman. Teaching contents are gradually deepened, starting from basic concepts,
fundamentals and equations. The weekly study time is around 3 hours, and students
should attend all the lectures, actively finish the assignments and most importantly
conduct critical thinking for relevant problems after classes.
Three special lectures will be arranged, relating to the combustion frontiers, solid
fuel combustion and knocking combustion. Furthermore, under the support of
school of mechanical engineering, some related experts will be invited to introduce
relevant knowledge. The specialty lectures will be finally determined before spring
semester.
