Acommercialpilotlicense(CPL),isaqualificationthatpermitstheholdertoactasapilotofanaircraftandbe
paidforhis/herwork.
ThebasicrequirementstoobtainthelicenseandtheprivilegesitconfersareagreedinternationallybyInternational
CivilAviationOrganization(ICAO).Howevertheactualimplementationvariesquitewidelyfromcountryto
country.AccordingtoICAO,tobeeligibleforacommercialpilotlicense,theapplicantmustbeabletoread,
speak,write,andunderstandEnglish:alreadyholdaprivatepilotlicense,havereceivedtrainingintheareasofa
commercialpilot,andsuccessfullycompletetherelevantwrittenexams.Toproceedinobtainingacommercial
pilotlicense,theapplicantmustfirstobtainfirstclassmedicalcertification.TheJAAhasseveralapprovedcourses
leadingtotheissueofaJAAcommercialpilot'slicensewithaninstrumentratingwithoutfirstobtainingaprivate
pilot'slicense.Uponcompletingthoseprerequisitestheapplicantwillthenreceiveanexamfromthegoverning
aviationbodythatconsistsofanoralandpracticalflighttestfromanexaminer.ApplicantsforaCPL(aeroplanes)
mustalsohavecompletedasolocrosscountryflightofatleast300nmwithfullstoplandingsattwoairfields
otherthanthepilot'sairfieldoforigin.
Differenttypesofcommercialpilotcertificatesorlicensesareissuedforthemajorcategoriesofaircraft:airplanes,
airships,balloons,gliders,gyroplanesandhelicopters.Asnotedbelow,dependingontheissuingjurisdictionthese
mayallbeonthesamedocument.
Acertificate/licensewillcontainanumberofsubqualificationsorratings.Thesespecifyinmoredetailtheactual
privilegesofthelicense,includingthetypesofaircraftthatcanbeflown(singleengineormultiengine),whether
flightunderinstrumentflightrulesisallowed(instrumentrating),andwhetherinstructingandexaminingoftrainee
pilotscanbedone(instructororexaminerrating).Itmaybepossibletoshowtheseratingsatdifferentlevels.For
example,aUnitedStatescertificatecouldread,"CommercialPilotGlider,PrivatePrivilegesAirplaneSingle
EngineLand".
SomeJAAstates(butnottheUnitedStates)restricttheuseofthetitle"Captain"toCPLholdersandabove.Inthe
UnitedStates,aCPLhastraditionallybeensufficienttobeapilotonaregularlyscheduledpassengerflight,while
anATPLisrequiredtoserveasthepilotincommandofsuchaflight(14CFR121.437).EffectiveJuly15,2013,
allpilotscrewingU.S.airlines'regularlyscheduledpassengerflightsmustholdanATPL(includingthecopilot).
