Unit Title: Introduction to Functions

Name: Carlos Bernabe

Content Area: Mathematics 1 (Algebra 1)

Grade Level: 8-9th grade.

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Use Function Notation, Evaluate Functions for Inputs in their Domain, and interpret statements that use function Notation. For a
function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key feature of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities,
and sketch graphs. Showing key features given a verbal description of the graph.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

How can functions be shown in real life applications?

What do graphs of functions show us?

Unit Summary:

In this unit we will learn the fundamentals of functions. Functions will be the fundamental step as you transition to higher mathematics.
We will first learn function notation like "x" (sometime referred to as the domain or inputs) and "y" (sometimes referred to as the range or
outputs). Will then jump to build functions that models relations between two quantities. Finally, will be able to make graph functions of
the form y=mx+b, construct functions based off information of a graph and be able to describe what the slope, y-intercept, x-intercepts
are.

Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level: Whats does real life

application of function look
like?

Formative: Flash cards

regarding definitions about
functions.

Summative: Individual ProjectStudents will have to graph

linear equations in order to

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
Students will learn
how to graph a
function of the form
y=mx+b.

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):
During the Formative
part of the
assessment plan
students will have to
graph functions of the
form y=mx+b free
hand.

Lesson Activities:
During some part of any given day after talking about graphing functions of the form
y=mx+b students will be given a quiz and have to graph functions of said form free
handed.

Acceptable Evidence:
Itll be known after
they turn in their
group assignment of
identifying said
intercepts and slope.

Lesson Activities:
Students will be placed in groups and each be given their own paper to turn in after
they finish determining the x-intercept, y-intercept and slope.

Lesson 2
Student Learning
Objective: Students
will learn how to
graph functions and
determine its xintercept, y-intercept,
and slope.
Lesson 3

Student Learning
Objective: Students
will determine certain
x and y values using
the slope-intercept
formula.

Acceptable Evidence:

Lesson Activities:

Theyll be given
certain slope intercept
formulas and theyll
be able to determine
what the x and y
values are.

Theyll use the website www.geogebra.com to graph functions of the slope-intercept

form and theyll visually see the x and y values.
