11 Comparative Essay General Feedback

Affect is a verb, meaning to influence something. Effect is a noun, meaning


something that was influenced.
o Harry wondered if the heat was having an effect on the fish
o Harrys grumpiness affected everyone elses mood last night
o The context affects the setting of the film. This has a direct effect on
the audiences desire to see the film.

Dont start a sentence with however or whereas. If you use either of these
words, put a comer before (and usually after) to split the sentence. Be careful
not to make your sentences too long, if you need to make two different
sentences, find another word.
o Harry really wanted to attend the party, however, he still had a pile of
homework to do.
o While apples and oranges both have outer skins, the apples skin is
green, whereas the orange has orange skin.

Make sure you are answering the question and linking each paragraph back to
the question. Most of your discussions were accurate, however, you have not
linked it back to why or how what you have discussed answers the question
posed to you.

The assignment is focused on the film trailers, not the film itself. Be carful not
to include background knowledge of the film or any information or scenes
that are not depicted in the trailer. Also, assume that the person reading your
essay has not seen these trailers. Be specific in your examples and
descriptions.

The P in CFLAP does not stand for PLOT. The discussion of plot does not have
a place in analysis as, more often than not, you simply end up re-telling the
story. Dont talk about plot.

While subheadings may help you in the writing process, please dont include
them in your essay.
