Insolvingengineeringproblems,engineersusuallydon'thavetheluxuryoftime.Mostsituationsdemand
immediate results. The price of falling behind schedule is typically costly and at worst, fatal to human life.
Therefore, every precaution must be taken to speed up the calculations an engineer makes. Below I
introducemethodstotackleproblemsspeedilywiththeuseofaCasiocalculatorFX991ES.
For algebraic problems where you need to find the exact value of a dependent or independent
variable,justusetheCALCorMode5functions.
Fordefinitedifferentiationandintegrationproblems,simplyusethed/dxandintegraloperatorsinthe
COMPmode.
For models that follow the differential equation: dP/dx=kt and models that follow a geometric
function(i.e.A*B^x).
SimplygotoMode3(STAT)5e^x
ForgeometricfunctionsMode3(STAT)6A*B^x
(Why?BecausethesolutiontotheD.E.dP/dx=ktisanexponentialfunctione^x.
Whenweknowtheboundaryconditions,wecaninputthemforregression.)
Example:
IarriveatanurbanareawhereIplantosetupcellsitesthatcouldsatisfythelocale'sneedsfor10years.
The population is 200. 2 years later, the population has increased to 1000. I assume a basic exponential
model.HowmanycellsshouldIplanforifIalotaGradeofServiceof0.02correspondingto1000peopleper

Therefore,Ihavetoplanfor625cells.

Formodelsfollowinganarithmeticprogressionorlinearrelationship,
SimplygotoMode3(STAT)2A+B*X
(Again,thisisbecausethenatureofarithmeticprogressionisrepeatedaddition.WiththeSTATfunction,
wecandoregressiongivensufficientdata.)
Example:
Ihavea105kohmresistorat30degreesCelsiusinanairconditionedroom.Itstemperatureincreasesto
47degreesCelsiusafterItakeitoutonahotsummersday,therebyincreasingitsresistanceby700ohms
(positivetemperaturecoefficient).WhatwouldbeitsresistancewhenItakeittothelivingroomwherethereis

Forapproximationsandfunctionswherethelimitistobetaken,theTABLEfunctioncanbeused.
For finding the angle between 2 vectors, we can use Mode 8 (VECTOR). This is a bit simple and
obviousbutIthinkitsworthmentioninghere:
Inourvectoranalysiscoursewerememberthat:
dotproduct(A,B)=abs(A)*abs(B)cos(theta)
therefore:
theta=arccos(dotproduct(A,B)/(abs(A)*abs(B)))
WesimplyjusthavetoprovidethevaluesforvectorsAandB.
ForLaplaceTransforms,wecansolveforaspecificvalueusingtheintegralfunctionofthefx991ES.

Example:FindtheLaplaceTransformof3*cos(t)*t^4.(remembertoputthecalc.inradianmode)
theanswer:
(360*s)/(s^2+1)^3(1440*s^3)/(s^2+1)^4+(1152*s^5)/(s^2+1)^5
Lets=2.5
(trueanswer:0.1657)
integratefrom0.1to5withthefunctionmultipliedbyexp((2.5)x)
=0.168
(closeenough)
Note:ThereisaMatlabfunctionthatwillgettheLaplaceofanyfunction.
Declarevariablesasstringfirst.>>symst
FindtheLaplace.>>laplace(3*cos(t)*t^4)
ForFourierTransforms,wecansolveforaspecificvalueusingSimpson's1/3rule(sincewecan'tuse
