hilRice will commercialize the

Palaycheck System after successful tests conducted in 15 sites
in 12 provinces during the 2004 wet
season up to 27 sites in 14 provinces
during the 2007 dry season.
The PalayCheck System is a dynamic
rice crop management system that
presents easy-to-follow practices (called
Key Checks in this system) in the use
of quality seeds, land preparation, crop
establishment, water, nutrient, pest,
and harvest management activities
to achieve target yields and improve
input use efficiency. It is accompanied
by a learning process wherein a farmer
understands why a certain Key Check
is achieved or not achieved so that improvement in crop management can be
made in the next season.
The Palaycheck System is initiated by
PhilRice in 2004 in collaboration with
the Food and Agriculture Organization.
PhilRice will start commercializing
the PalayCheck System by training
experts from the Agricultural Training
Institute of the Department of Agriculture to enhance their capacities in
training farmers at the provincial and

local government levels with minimum

The system had been tested in Nueva
Ecija, Leyte, Isabela, Negros
Occidental, Cotabato, Davao del Sur,
and Iloilo.The commercialization of
the PalayCheck System will help to
increase national rice production and
hence narrow the yield gap, increase
farmers profitability, reduce production
cost, and enhance environment safety,
PalayCheck Project Leader Dr. Rolando
T. Cruz said.
The method of clustering will be
adopted in identifying future PalayCheck sites to facilitate the collection
and analysis of data. Farmers who wish
to be part of the cluster should be willing to adopt the recommended crop
management practices under the system
and regularly attend and participate in
farmers meetings, among other things.
The sites should also be irrigated and
preferably handled by farmers with
