INDUSTRY PROFILE

The Kerala State Co-operative Coir Marketing Federation (Coirfed), the Apex Federation of
Co-operative Societies engaged in the manufacture of coir and coir products is entrusted with
the task of marketing the produce of the Co-operative Societies. It provides sustenance to
workers especially women. Coirfed and its member societies provide higher employment,
better wages and better living conditions to the coir workers by eliminating middlemen. At
present 628 coir primaries are affiliated to Coirfed.
Coirfed has set up an array of 47 showrooms and more than 100 retails outlets to sell the
materials produced by the member societies. The procurement of the produce of the member
societies is done through four regional offices and one central store. Coirfed has set up a
number for state of the art factories for the manufacture of Coir fiber, Rubberised coir
products, Rubber backed coir products, PVC tufted mats and Pith briquette.
Coirfed is making efforts to sell the materials to serve a noble cause of providing sustence to
around 4 lakh coir workers. Most of these workers are women. It is estimated that around 20
Lakhs people are indirectly supported by this industry
The product range of Coirfed include Coir fiber, Coir pith fungus, Coir pith soil conditioner,
80 odd varieties of coir yarn, coir geo-textiles, alluring range of coir products like mats,
mattings, rugs, coir tiles and Rubberised coir products like Mattress, Pillows, PVC tufted
mats, Pith Briquettes, Garden materials like Pots, Climbers etc.
The products of Coirfed are marketed under the brands Cocofert, Cocoplus, Cocogeofabric,
Dustout and Deepsleep
Coirfed is facing stiff competition from the other natural fibres and synthetic materials. At
present Coirfed is making efforts to expand the reach of eco friendly and bio-degradable Coir
products through the help and assistance of all good citizens with care for nature and
mankind.
Coirfed is instrumental in implementing the novel schemes of Govt. of Kerala like
Distress purchase scheme, fibre subsidy scheme, Price fluctuation fund, Purchase
price stabilization scheme etc. Rs.2100 lakh Income support scheme and 145
lakhs SGSY scheme in coir industry.

Coirfed is a Co-operative apex federation with 23 member Director Board having


President and Managing Director at helm of administration.
The Federation has two major divisions, namely Product Division and Yarn Division.
Product Division deals with the procurement and marketing of coir products produced by
the manufacturing societies. It takes care of the factories producing value added, coir
products. A separate product marketing wing also has been setup to enable the marketing
of coir products. There is one Central Store, 8 Factories and 37 Showrooms under it.
Coir yarn division is established for handling the procurement and marketing of coir yarn
produced by the member societies. There are four regional offices at Kollam, Alappuzha,
Kochi and Kozhikode and 10 showrooms under this division.

POLITICAL IMPACT

1. Elaborate on the political influences and support from the government


Coirfed is a government undertaking organization. All the activities are
mainly done by the Government itself. So definitely we do get a lot of government
support and incentives.

2. What are the programs that would help Coirfed to improve the revenue ?
.
Conducting National / State level Expo, Coir Fair would help us to
take our products to the global level. Using modern machines for
manufacturing of our products leads to improved efficiency and
reduces our cost of production. Providing awareness about the job
opportunities of the organisations.

ECONOMIC IMPACT
Does this organization has any bank loan? if it is so, how it is repaid ?
They are having bank loan. Mode of repayment is 50 % of loan is paid by the
Government and the rest by the organization.

SOCIAL IMPACT
How about costumersinterest in the products. Is there any demand?

Now a days demand for Coirfed products is increasing. Demands for


these products are across worldwide. Branch manager had told that they
export goods across the world

What is the responds to the expo?


Expos are the main part of the business. There are different stalls which
displays new products of coirfed. Mainly government is organizing such
expos. Recently a state level expo has conducted @ pathanamthitta COIR
FAIR 2016.

TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT
What are the latest machines or technologies they use in the manufacturing

They are using the most modern techniques in their manufacturing


process under Kerala State Coir Machinery Manufacturing Company
(KSCMMC). Superior quality coir fibers are produced through advanced
thechnologies.eg. fiber extraction machine.

ECOLOGICAL IMPACT
Are these products are nature friendly. How its waste management is done?
The products which produce under COIRFED are always nature friendly
products. They do not harm the environment. Actually the main raw
material used to produce these products itself is a waste material (coconut
epidermis).by implementing of certain machines not a single waste
material is produced. The final waste produced is used as manure which
has high demand in agriculture field.
1. Is your company profitable or what is your profit for last year?
Yes of course the business is in profit as the young generation is behind as
well as with the latest trends of gadgets and also the locations is much
perfect to attract customers.

LEGAL IMPACT
Is there any law for their support?
There is no special law provided for the organization and it is a Government undertaking
organization so it is irrelevant
What are their plans for sustainable development ?
Thery have number of new plans to do the manufacturing in a sustainable
way. Yhey are contributing certain products which helps in preventing
many polllutios.
One of the major products produced for Sustainable Development is
COIR GEO CULTURE. CGC is the method used

to produced coir

products which helps in reducing pollutions.


APPLICATIONS
Sustaining vegetation and controlling soil erosion on steep slopes
Confining topsoil on steep barren slopes
Stabilization of steep stream banks and embankments
Lining canals and ash ponds
For cultivation on steep slope.

Eg.Artifical water bunds


Coir mat used in tarring of roads
Geo textile mat used in slope farming which prevents soil erosion.

CONCLUSION
Meet the entrepreneur indeed proved to be extremely beneficial to
me as it fetched a better idea into the life of an entrepreneur. The
thought provoking and insightful advices and anecdotes shared
brought to my notice the unheard saga of an entrepreneur.
During the study it was found that to be a good entrepreneur one has
to be a passion driven and dynamic. Changing with time and
innovative is the key to sustainability of the business. The study also
helped me understand the problems and difficult situations that test
the love of the entrepreneur toward his job.
Further, we need some kind of promotion activities to hold the present
customers and make new customers. The study helped me to
understand functioning of the company and also the opportunities and
threats faced by it.
