Design Philosophy
1. Overview
The existing building appears to be a Victorian or an Edwardean detached dwelling house. The
building is of masonry construction with suspended timber floors and a timber framed roof. The
original house has been extended to the side in the past.
To facilitate the loft conversion, new beams will be inserted at roof and loft level to support the
new loft as well as the new loft loadbearing walls and columns. The loadbearing walls are to
support the new ridge beams and rafters and allow for the removal of the existing diagonal
strutting. These shall be designed at a later stage if and when a planning application for the loft
has been granted.
New steel beams and frames are to be installed to create the structural openings at the rear and
amalgomate the new extension with the existing accomodation. Further steels will be required to
support the first floor walls which are offset from those at ground floor level. The new extension is
to feature a timber (and steel) framed roof and perimeter loadbearing walls resting onto strip
footings. The depth of footings to be determined in accordance with Building Regs Part A and
NHBC recommendations for construction near trees.
Please refer to the STS structural drawings for more information.

General Information:
Assumed unit settlement of soil 20mm for 100kN/m2 permitted bearing stress
This gives the unit stiffness coefficient of soil 100kN/m2 / 0.02m = 5000 kN/m3
Assumption is that the footing itself is infinitely stiff (compared to the soil)
The total width of the footing is 0.53m (worst case scenario), hence, the
stiffness for a linear support is 5000 x 0.53 = 2600 kN/m/m
The width of the box-frame = length of the bottom member
The reaction are from the first floor beam analysis + s.w. of columns
