Describe the followings:


a) Major differences between subsonic and supersonic airfoils
b) The area rule
c) Karman Tsien Rule
d) Importance of Critical Mach number
Draw the schematic diagram of supersonic wind tunnel and write down which
throat area is bigger and explain it why!

Derive and prove that, the linearized pressure coefficient depends only on the
x-component of the perturbation velocity.

Define the concept of effective body, and how to determine the momentum
thickness () in boundary layer properties!

Consider an aircraft with platform area 19m2 in steady level flight at Mach 2.2
at 8km altitude. The weight of the aircraft is at its combat weight of 10200Kgf.
Assume that all the lift of the airplane comes from the lift on the wings and the
CL of the wing is the same as the Cl for the airfoil section. Calculate the
followings:
a) Angle of attack of the wing relative to the free stream

b) Airfoil skin friction & wave drag ( for both laminar & turbulent flows)
c) Compare the previous two values and make the conclusions.
d) At what , the wave drag is equal to skin friction drag.
