Teaching speaking

Speaking is one of the most important skills in second

language learning. The process of speaking skill is preceded by
listening skill. Increasing listening skill is very beneficial for speaking
ability. The goal of teaching speaking skills is to make students
being able to share their ideas and opinions in order to
communicate with their teachers and classmates. Teachers should
apply appropriate method and technique for teaching speaking skill
and should use a lot of activities to make students being active in
the class in order to create effective classroom environment where
students have real life communication, activities, and meaningful
tasks that promote oral language and to use the language quickly
and confidently with few unnatural pauses, which is called as
.fluency. (Nunan, 2003)
Students must be able to express their intentions, that is, they
must learn the meanings that are important to them. (adapted from
Brown, 1995: 5). Many linguistics and teachers in English language
teaching agree on that students learn to speak in the second
language by "interacting", so teachers should provide an
appropriate method to apply in order to prevent "inhibition" of the
students and they should focus on fluency rather than accuracy
which can be done by using communicative language teaching
which is based on real-life situations that require communications
relating to real actions that students learn from. In my opinion by

using this method in the class, students will have the opportunity of
communicating with each other in the target language and being in
charge with the process of English language learning which also
stated by Harmer (2001: 86) "The communicative approach or CLT
have now become generalized terms to describe learning sequences
which aim to improve the student's ability to communicate, in
stark contrast to teaching which is aimed more at learning bits of
language just because they exist and without focusing on their use
."in communication
Teachers should provide an effective activities to reinforce
students' achievement in speaking skill such as using group
discussion which allow students to share their ideas in groups and
present their opinions to the class. Fauziati (2002: 134) states that
the main aim of group discussion is to improve fluency, grammar in
probably best allowed functioning as a naturally communicative
context. Also teachers can use role play or simulation in order to
make students as a part of the lesson and can tell the student that
"You are David, you go to the doctor and tell him what happened
last night, and" (Harmer, 1984). All these activities can be
developed by the teachers to engage students in class and provide
maximum opportunity to students to speak the target language by
providing a rich environment that contains collaborative work,
.authentic materials and tasks

Teaching speaking is a very important part of second language learning. The

ability to communicate in a second language clearly and efficiently contributes to the
success of the students in school and engage them in the learning process. Therefore,
it is essential that language teachers should pay great attention to teaching speaking.
providing a rich environment where meaningful communication takes place is more
beneficial from leading students to memorize conversations. The suggested speaking
activities such as those mentioned above can contribute a great deal to students in
developing basic interactive skills necessary for life. These activities make students
more active in the learning process and at the same time make their learning more
.meaningful and fun for them
