Answer 1 ) Masbet Corporation had been a family owned company.

It was downward
communication dominated. Downward communication flows from a superior to a
subordinate. The Managing Director communicating with the departmental head, a manager
giving a directive to an assistant manager or a supervisor, a foreman instructing a worker, are
all engaged in the process of downward communication.
However due downward communication the organization had to faced various
disadvantages. They are as follows:
1. Time consuming: Downward communication of Masbet Corporation was time consuming
communication because it moved along the line of command of the hierarchy. It results in
waste of time as the line of communication was long. The lines of communication in
downward communication being very long, transmitting information to the lowest worker
was time-consuming process. By the time information reaches the person who was suppose to
work on it, may have lost much of its significant or it may have caused damaging delay.
2. Distortion : Downward communication of Masbet Corporation had to pass through many
levels of authority, so there was a delay as well as distortion of the message. In long lines of
communication, information was not lost but even distorted. Exaggerating, making understatements are a part of human nature. By the time it reaches its destination, it may not
contain any of the truth.
3. Authoritarian approach :In downward communication, of Masbet Corporation there was
too much concentration of authority at the higher level. As people in the lower levels are
merely receivers of decisions. So they unconsciously receive such message .
4. Over and under Communication :Downward communication of Masbet Corporation
suffered from over communication or under-communication.
5. Different priorities: In downward communication, of Masbet Corporation the employees
seek information about job security, salary, promotion and other beneficial schemes, but the
management prefers to pass down orders and directions only. The gap between their priorities
leaves the employees and employers dissatisfied.
6. No confidential matter :In downward communication, of Masbet Corporation
confidential matter could not be disclosed to lower levels.

7. Loss of information: in case of Masbet Corporation Unless the communication was fully
written, it was not likely to be transmitted downwards completely. A part of it was almost
certain to be lost.
8. Built in resistance: Downward communication of Masbet Corporation smacked of too
much authoritarianism. The subordinates did not get any opportunity of participating in the
decision-making process. They were expected to receive the policy decision from the top
management.
These were various disadvantages faced due downward communication by the organization .
While Masbet Corporation were celebrating their 50th Anniversary the new generation of
management wanted to make some changes in the way communication flows. Hence the
current downward communication dominance was changed to more lateral communication.
Lateral communication is the exchange, sharing of information, ideas or feeling between
people within a community, peer groups, departments or units of an organization who are at
or about the same hierarchical level as each other for the purpose of coordinating activities,
efforts or fulfilling a common purpose or goal.
So following were what advantages of lateral communication that might be offered due to the
change:
1. Saves time : Lateral communication will saves time. Many urgent decisions in the
organization may be taken on the spot without any delay which wasnt possible in the
downwards communication.
2.Quick communication and solution of problems: Lateral communication will allow
quick transmission of messages and solve complex problems in the organization which
wasnt possible in the downwards communication.
3.Co-ordination and co-operation : Lateral communication will be of great help to bring
better co-ordination and greater co-operation between the staff which wasnt possible in the
downwards communication.
4. Informal and sweet relationship: This is same status levels communication system. The
top level management as well as the lower level management exchange ideas, knowledge and

thoughts. So, an informal and sweet relationship can be maintained staff which wasnt
possible in the downwards communication.
5. Efficiency : Lateral communication will ensures the greater efficiency and better results
which wasnt possible in the downwards communication.
6.Immediate feedback : Lateral communication is generally oral and personally, the chances
of misunderstanding are much less as the feedback is immediate which wasnt possible in the
downwards communication .
7. Dynamism at work: If Lateral communication was established in organizational
dynamism at work will increase among workers which wasnt possible in the downwards
communication.
8. Guarding against distortion message: Lateral communication takes place among the
employees of the same level, information reaches directly from one employee or executive to
another which acts as a guard against distortion messages.
9. End of misunderstanding: There will be no chance of misunderstanding in Lateral
communication among employees. So, it is helpful to management for enhancing mutual
understanding and good decision making which wasnt possible in the downwards
communication.
10. Checks grapevine : Lateral channel will brings employees closer. It enables them to
discuss matters directly and personally. This checks the growth of informal communication /
grapevine which wasnt possible in the downwards communication.
So the new generation of Masbet Corporation management would changes in communication
by following lateral communication and will at advantage due to all the above mentioned
advantages.
