COHORT/CONTEXT DESCRIPTION

This subject is to be undertaken at the secondary campus of Samaritan College, a Catholic College in
Whyalla.
This program is designed for one Year 11 class who have selected this different mode of Religion Studies.
There are 4 boys and 9 girls in this class. Given the students have chosen to be in this class they are a
motivated group with additional skills in music, arts and dance.

LEARNING PROGRAM DESIGN

In our Religious and Spiritual Traditions Study we will focus on Liturgical Celebrations. After an introduction to
Christianity (with a special focus on Catholicism) we will consider the structural elements of liturgical events. We will
explore the influences on liturgical design and consider the impact of our understanding of religion and spirituality and
how the liturgy can express both our religiosity and spirituality. Some time will be spent considering the changes to
liturgy over the years, including the changes to the Catholic Mass following the Second Vatican Council.
The issue investigation will focus on Youth and contemporary ethical issues. This will allow students to evaluate current
practices and speculate about possible futures. This investigation allows students to identify, analyse, evaluate and
justify their perspective on an ethical issue following the consideration of a variety of perspectives.
Students have four set times for class one for 1.5 hours and three for 45 mins. Computer and library facilities are
available. This is a very practical course and students engage in a vast amount of practical activity. In addition to class
time (and as a part of their Investigation) students prepare and participate in a Year 11 liturgy, which occurs out of class
time.
CAPABILITIES, LITERACY AND NUMERACY OPPORTUNITIES

Capabilities
This program is designed to develop students ability to engage in effective communication as this is vital to
successfully complete the set tasks and will be utilised consistently in class where, due to the collaborative effort
required, communication will be used in different forms. From their participation in this class it is anticipated that
students will develop a greater appreciation of the relationship between religion and society and the impacts both on
the individual and society. Building upon the class work on religious experience and the practical experience of the
Liturgies it is anticipated that students will extend their personal skills, participating in activities that encourage selfawareness and self-confidence. Due to the level of analysis required and research within this course students should
receive ample opportunity to develop their capability for learning.

Literacy and Numeracy skills

Essentially this is a language rich subject and as such students have sufficient opportunity to develop their literacy.
Due primarily to the investigative element, students will collate data and analyse it and in doing so have the opportunity
to develop their numeracy.

Description of Assessment (a description of the flexible, and where appropriate, negotiable, ways
in which students will show evidence that demonstrates their learning against the performance
standards, including to the highest standard)
Students plan a liturgy to take place at a celebration of the college patrons. The
duration of this liturgy can range from 45 mins to 1 hour and all of the class will be
involved in the planning and delivery. Following this, students are to justify and
explain the choices made about the liturgy, identifying the religious meaning and
tradition, explaining how their presentation allows for youth to engage in this
religious experience and derive meaning from it, and to clarify the targeted response.

Assessment conditions as
appropriate (e.g. task type, word
length, time allocated, supervision)

Students will plan and present the Opening School Mass for the College. This will also
incorporate the induction of the SRC. Following this experience students will reflect on certain
aspects and prepare a written or multi-media reflection.

Written task or multimedia. 500

750 words.

Students will investigate a contemporary ethical issue. After developing an understanding of

ethical thinking and various approaches to this, students will investigate the issue of asylum
seekers in Australia or a topic negotiated with the teacher. In a report they are to clarify the
religious beliefs that are relevant to this study, speculating on the importance of these beliefs and
whether they are being challenged by sociological influences, proposing possible outcomes from
the current situation if nothing changes and speculating about possible changes and the resulting
impact of such change.

Oral presentation 3-6 mins

written)
