Brittanys Story

29 year old Brittany Maynard writes that

after several months of severe headaches,
she learned she had brain cancer. The
doctors tried everything to save her, but they
told her that she had no chance of survival.
Instead of living her last few months in pain
because of the cancer and harsh
chemotherapy treatments, Maynard decided
that she would rather not be in pain and get it
over with. At the time, Doctor Assisted
Suicide was not illegal in her home town of
San Francisco, California. So her family
moved to Oregon, where it was legal.
Maynard was then given pills prescribed by
her doctor, knowing they would end her life.
She explained that she planned to die with
her husband, mother, stepfather, and best
friend at her side.

What to know about Doctor

Assisted Suicide and
Euthanasia

What is Euthanasia?
Gale Student Resources in Context
(GSRC) states that Euthanasia is the
act of causing or permitting the death
of someone who may be suffering from
an incurable or terminal illness, often
as a way to end the suffering of the
Individual. Assisted suicide is a type of
Euthanasia the authors say.

What are the types of

Euthanasia?
A patient may wish to have a lethal
injection, or they may ask for
prescribed pills by a doctor in which
they will pass away once ingested.

What is the difference

between Euthanasia and
Doctor Assisted Suicide?
The difference between the two is
who performs the final act. If the doctor
does it, it is Euthanasia. If the patient
performs it, it is Doctor Assisted
Suicide.

Euthanasia? If so, ask
yourself these questions:
Are you terminally ill?
Are you an adult?
Do you live in the United
States? If you do, do you live in
a state where it is legal?
Do you live in Europe? If
you do, do you live in a country
where it is legal?

Where is Euthanasia legal?

In the United States, Doctor
Assisted Suicide is only legal in a few
states. The states are:
Oregon
Washington
Vermont
California
Montana
In these states, the only type of
Euthanasia allowed is in pill form. The
doctor must prescribe it for the
terminally ill patient. In order to
perform the act, the patient has to be a
resident of the state.

Euthanasia in Europe
In Europe, Euthanasia is only legal
in the Netherlands, Belgium, and
Luxemborg. In the United States, you
have to be an adult to perform Doctor
Assisted Suicide, but thats not the
case in Europe. The Netherlands and
Belgium are the only countries to allow
terminally ill children to participate in
this. Belgium is the only country that
has no age restrictions to Doctor
Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia.
