Cooling
1.

If power to unit has been off for an extended period

of time, crankcase heater shall be energized at least
24 hours prior to starting compressor.

2.

The indoor fans, outdoor fans and compressor shall

start immediately upon command from the controlling
thermostat or the remote microprocessor control in
either the cooling or the heating mode of operation.
When first stage cooling is required, the first
cooling stage of the thermostat shall close causing
the heat pump to start with an unloaded compressor.
When the second cooling stage of the thermostat closes
demanding additional cooling, the compressor shall
load. In a system with a one stage thermostat, the
unit shall be wired so the compressor starts fully
loaded.

Heating
1. First Stage: when the thermostat calls for heating, the
indoor fan motor, outdoor fan motors and the
compressor (fully loaded) shall be energized.
2. Second Stage:
If additional heating is required, the
second heating stage on the thermostat closes causing
the auxiliary heat supply (i.e. electric strip heat)
8 to be energized in [1, 2 or 3] stages.

C.

Defrost cycle
1. Defrost shall be initiated every 90 minutes. The cycle
shall begin when the defrost timer motor contacts
close for 20 seconds, and if the defrost thermostat is
closed, the reversing valve and outdoor air fans shall
be de-energized. The unit shall operate in this
modified cooling mode to defrost the coil. This
defrost cycle shall continue until the defrost
thermostat opens or 10 minutes have elapsed.
2. When the unit is in the defrost cycle, the first step of
electric resistance heat shall be energized to prevent
cold air recirculation during this modified cooling
mode. Second and third steps of electric heat shall be
energized only if their outdoor air thermostat is
closed.

D.

Air Recirculation: When the fan switch is at FAN ON, the

indoor fans operate continuously to provide ventilation.
The thermostat operates the other components as described
above.

1.

If the compressor is inoperative due to a tripped

safety device, the second stage of the thermostat
shall automatically energize the indoor air fan and
electric resistance heaters.

2.

If desired, the compressor shall be able to manually

be locked out by setting the thermostat at Emergency
Heat. In this instance, the emergency heat indicator
light on the thermostat assembly shall be illuminated.
This information shall be included on the maintenance
manual.
