Abstract
Pain,whethercausedbyphysicalinjuryorsocialrejection,isaninevitablepartoflife.Thesetwotypesof
painphysicalandsocialmayrelyonsomeofthesamebehavioralandneuralmechanismsthatregister
painrelatedaffect.Totheextentthatthesepainprocessesoverlap,acetaminophen,aphysicalpain
suppressantthatactsthroughcentral(ratherthanperipheral)neuralmechanisms,mayalsoreduce
behavioralandneuralresponsestosocialrejection.Intwoexperiments,participantstook
acetaminophenorplacebodailyfor3weeks.Dosesofacetaminophenreducedreportsofsocialpainon
adailybasis(Experiment1).Weusedfunctionalmagneticresonanceimagingtomeasureparticipants'
brainactivity(Experiment2),andfoundthatacetaminophenreducedneuralresponsestosocial
rejectioninbrainregionspreviouslyassociatedwithdistresscausedbysocialpainandtheaffective
componentofphysicalpain(dorsalanteriorcingulatecortex,anteriorinsula).Thus,acetaminophen
reducesbehavioralandneuralresponsesassociatedwiththepainofsocialrejection,demonstrating
substantialoverlapbetweensocialandphysicalpain.
