TheOxfordMindfulnessCentrehasforsometimebeenworkingonthefieldofmindfulnessinschoolsin
collaborationwithseveralpartners.Anewproject,fundedbytheWellcomeTrust,startedinJanuary2015.Itis
basedontheknowledgethatadolescenceisavulnerabletimefortheonsetofmentalillness:75%ofmental
disordersbeginbeforetheageof24,andhalfbyage15.Bypromotinggoodmentalhealthandintervening
early,particularlyinthecrucialchildhoodandteenageyears,wecanhelptopreventmentalillnessfrom
developingandmitigateitseffectswhenitdoes(DepartmentofHealth,2011).

Justasphysicaltrainingisassociatedwithphysicalhealth,psychologicalresiliencetrainingisassociatedwith
mentalhealth.Weareusingthe.bmindfulnessinschoolsprogrammedevelopedbytheMindfulnessinSchools
ProjectasaMindfulnessTraining(MT)intervention.The.bprogrammeisbasedonthe8weekMBCTcourse
whichisknowntobeeffectiveinpreventingdepressionandpromotingmentalhealthinadults,adaptedto
appealtoteenagersandworkinamainstreamclassroomsetting.Thisprogrammehasbeensubjecttotwo
feasibilitystudies,whichshowedimpactsonmentalhealth,stressandwellbeing,particularlywhenyoung
peoplepractisedmindfulness.

Thethreethemesoftheprojectwill:
1.examinewhetherMTimprovesresilienceinyoungadolescents,howiteffectstheirprocessingofthoughts
andfeelings,whethertherearedifferenteffectsatdifferentstagesofdevelopment,andexamineeffects
amongboththosewithpoororgoodmentalhealthand
2.discoverthebestwaytotrainteacherstodeliveraMTcurriculumandhowtoimplementitinschools.
3.conductalargeclusterrandomisedcontrolledtrialtoestablishwhethermindfulnesstraininginschoolsis
effectiveandcosteffective.

TheprojectisledbyMarkWilliamsandWillemKuykenattheUniversityofOxford,withSarahJayne
BlakemoreofUniversityCollegeLondon,andTimDalgleishoftheMedicalResearchCouncil.TheProject
ManagerisCatherineCrane.OthercoinvestigatorsandcollaboratorsaredrawnfromBirkbeckCollege(Iriose
Dumontheil),KingsCollegeLondon(SarahByford,PatrickSmith),theMedicalResearchCouncilCognition
andBrainSciencesUnit(DuncanAstle,SusanGathercole),PennStateUniversity(MarkGreenberg),the
NationalChildrensBureau(FergusCrowe),theUniversityofCambridge(FeliciaHuppert,IanGoodyer),
UniversityCollegeHospital(DuncanAstle),UniversityCollegeLondon(MaartenSpeekenbrink),the
UniversityofExeter(TamsinFord,ObiUkoumunne,KatherineWeare),theUniversityofMinnesota(Phil
Zelazo),andtheUniversityofOxford(ChrisFairburn,AlanStein).Theworkisundertakenincollaboration
withtheMindfulnessinSchoolsProject,workingcloselywiththetwoteacherswhodevelopedthemindfulness
trainingcurriculum,RichardBurnettandChrisCullen.
