BU Campus Educational Planning: East Campus

One of the satellite campus of Bicol University is the BU East Campus. It is

located at Brgy. 1 Enlisted Men (EMs) Barrio, Rizal Street, Legazpi City. The
campus is comprised of two colleges namely BU College of Industrial Technology
and BU College of Engineering, and the BU Institute of Architecture. Buildings and
facilities that are found in the campus are mainly based on a clustered form.
Structures are grouped together by proximity and most buildings close together are
sharing a common trait. For example the Architecture building and Engineering
Building is divided, from the students who uses it and to the design of structure.
Having a clustered a campus has its disadvantages, not only the buildings are
grouped but the students also. Harmony and unity is important especially in an
educational institution like the BU East Campus. The campus is not unified, it is
divided like buildings on it. Although there are some places that are common to
everyone like lounges and canteens where people can mingle, but those areas are
not big enough to accommodate everyone.
The construction of buildings are not well-planned, they place a building
where there is an open space not considering its impact to the area itself and to the
structures surrounding it. Connection to each facilities is also one of the problem that
I have noticed, proper corridors, covered walks, sidewalks and walkways are not
located on appropriate areas. Students passing by the corridors are disturbing ongoing classes, they also walk side by side with the moving cars because of lack of
sidewalks and covered walks is supposed to be the passage when it is too hot and it
is raining but there is not enough of them, for you to go through one building to
another.
Another problem is the landscapes inside the campus. Landscape is a factor
needed to have a good atmosphere in an educational organization. As I have noticed
in the East campus plants are not properly maintained and they are not placed in
appropriate areas. Landmarks are also present in the campus but they are not
appreciated well enough because they placed in a proper area.
In other words the BU East campus does not meet the standards of the
universitys vision which is, A world-class university producing leaders and change
agents for social transformation and development.
