Types of Tissues in Multicellular

Organisms
The levels of organization in the
human body consist of cells, tissues,
organs, and organ systems, which we
introduced last class. Today, we will
focus on tissues.
A tissue is a group of similar cells that
perform the same function. The human
body contains four basic types of tissue:
muscle tissue, nerve tissue, connective
tissue, and epithelial tissue.

Muscle tissue can contract, or shorten.

This tissue is what makes parts of your
body move. There are 3 types of muscle
tissue: Cardiac Muscle in your heart,
skeletal muscle that moves your skeleton
like your bicep, and Smooth Muscle in
your other organs like your stomach.

Connective tissue
provides support for your
body and connects all its
parts. Tendons, Ligaments
and Cartilage are
connective tissue as they
hold parts of your body
together. Surprisingly,
bone, fat (called adipose),
and blood are all
connective tissues as well.

Nervous tissue carries

messages back and forth
between the brain and every
other part of the body. It
directs and controls the
body. The 3 types of
nervous tissue is the brain,
spinal cord and the body
nerves.

Epithelial tissue covers the surfaces of your body. The largest epithelial
tissue is the skin. But it also includes the lining of all your organs. For
example your stomach is lined with epithelial cells that replaced often
because the stomachs acid kills them. Other Epithelial cells are shown
below.
