Read-to-Self Lesson Plan
Objectives/Goals: Students will be able to read a text using the Read-to-Self method. Then they
will be able to name and describe the phases of the Moon, explain how the Moons orbit of the
Earth and its relationship to both the Earth and the Sun affect our view of the Moon on Earth.
TEKS: 110.14 (11) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Independent Reading. Students
read independently for sustained periods of time and produce evidence of their reading. Students
are expected to read independently for a sustained period of time and paraphrase what the
reading was about, maintaining meaning and logical order (e.g., generate a reading log or
journal; participate in book talks.) (13) Reading/Comprehension

of Informational

Text/Expository Text. Students analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about expository
text and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to: (A)
identify the details or facts that support the main idea;
112.14 (3) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student knows that information,
critical thinking, scientific problem solving, and the contributions of scientists are used in
making decisions. The student is expected to: (C) represent the natural world using
models such as volcanoes or Sun, Earth, and Moon system and identify their limitations,
including size, properties, and materials;

Focus Lesson Procedures:

1. Teaching an Informational Text: As a group, we will divide the students into four smaller
groups and we will introduce the informational text for the lesson, Phases of the Moon: CrossCurricular Focus: Earth Science we retrieved from www.k12reader.com, to the students. We
will give a copy of text to each student in order for them to follow along during the teacher lead
read-aloud. Once read, we will have a whole group discussion about the text. We will ask the
students:
- What is meant by a lunar phase of the Moon?
- Why does the Moon appear to be different sizes?
- What is your favorite phase of the Moon? Why?
After discussing the text and finished with the question and answer portion,
we will begin our small group lesson on the phases of the Moon in the groups
the students have been divided in, with one teacher at each group.
our small group read-to-self lesson.
2. Graphic Organizer: Once the students have finished discussing the text, in our small groups, we
will introduce the graphic organizer for the lesson. Each student will be given a copy of the
graphic organizer and will be given instructions on how to complete it. We will ask the students
to read the prompt and instructions to themselves and have them process what they are going to
do. We will then call upon the students to take turns reading the prompt on the graphic organizer,
reading the instructions, and reading the questions they are given to answer. The graphic
organizer will discuss the different phases of the Moon and how they appear at different times of
the month. Students will learn how different angles of the Moon make on the Sun and changes
the way we view the Moon from Earth. There will be four spaces with a blank Moon and a
description. The students will have to cut out the proper Moon that will match the description
and glue it to its proper space which provided by the answer key at the bottom of the page.
3. Writing Prompt: After completing the graphic organizer, the students will be given a writing
prompt that will allow them to show their comprehension of what they learned about the Moon
and the different ways they view the Moon from Earth. The writing prompt will give the students
an opportunity express in writing what they think about the Moon and how they can reverse it.

The writing prompt will ask the students, If you were the Moon looking at Earth, what do you
think you would see? Why?.
Daily 5
I-Chart & Modeling: As a group, we will introduce to the students to the I-Chart at the
beginning of class which will describe the day's objective and what is expected of the students
and what they students can expect from us as teachers during the lesson, Phases of the Moon.
Read-to-Self Practice Procedures:
1. Teachers will go over the I-Chart and what is expected from both the students and teacher as a

whole group.
2. Teachers will break the students up into small groups.
3. Teachers will then pass out the text for the students to look at.
4. Teachers will read the text to the students.
5. Students will then be asked to read the text to themselves.
6. Then the students will be given a graphic organizer in order to check their understanding from

the text.
7. Once the graphic organizer is completed, the students will then do a writing prompt in order to
check the comprehension of the students.
8. Re-enforce their understanding of what they read, teachers will then pass out paper plates with

a picture of the Earth pasted on it and a picture of the Sun on the outside of the plate.
9. Teachers will pass out 8 Oreos that show different phases of the moon.
10. The students will need to put the Oreos in order based on the phases.
11. Students will be given index cards with labels to place next to the phase.
Closure: Teacher will discuss what the students read in the text and go over the graphic

organizer as a whole group to check understanding.

Assessment: The students will be given a decorated paper plate with the Earth and the Sun and
will learn/review the different moon phases. The visual will help the students get and
understanding of the placement of the Sun and the Earth and the way it affects the way we view
the Moon.
