Lab Report Guidelines

This is a technical report.

1.
2.
3.
4.

Use short sentences.

Avoid copy-paste and write only what you understood from the literature and what you did.
All figures must have clearly labeled axes.
Everything must be cited properly.

The final grade of the report is for both the technical results and the format of the report. Here is a
suggested format.

Cover Page
The cover page must include:
1. The names and bench numbers of the participating members.
2. The report title and date.
3. The affiliation.

Abstract (maximum of page)

This is a summary of the report. It should stand alone and is comprehensible. The abstract usually is
statements such as:
1. In this experiment we did .
2. The results concluded that
3. It was found that ,,,

Introduction (maximum of 1 page)

In general the introduction should answer three problems:
1. What is the problem
2. Who attempted to solve the problem
3. What you did to contribute to the solution
In the case of this report only there is no contribution, so your introduction should answer the first and
third questions. It is suggested to answer the first question in a paragraph be describing the flow around
a bluff body, separation, etc Images from the web can be used, and a proper citation must be added.

Methodology (maximum of 2 pages)

In this section you should explain how you did the measurements. What apparatus you used, and the
underlying theory used to obtain the results. For instance:
1. The use of a manometer (Utube or digital) to obtain pressure.
2. The use of Bernoulli equation to obtain the velocity.

3. The use of uncertainty analysis to obtain uncertainty in measurements.

Results
Here you suppose to represent the experimental results and compare them with the theory. Each result
must be accompanied with a figure and appropriate explanation.

Pressure distribution and coefficient around the cylinder and compare with potential flow
theory
o Integrate the pressure to obtain the drag force and the coefficient of drag
o Compare the coefficient of drag with published data for different Reynolds numbers.
Compare the velocity around the cylinder with potential flow theory.
Velocity distribution upstream and downstream of the cylinder spanning the tunnel (atleast 15
points measured).
Using the uncertainty analysis obtain the error bounds.

Conclusion (maximum of 1 page)

What are the conclusions? Are results similar to theory and published data? If not, why.

References
All the references used must be properly cited in the text (even figures).
