CHNG3007 Separation Processes 2 Class Projects (2016/2017)

Carry out the assigned project making initial estimates, then using the Lewis-Matheson technique and finally
comparing the results obtained when simulated on HYSIS. [25%].

Objective
Design a distillation column to recover 95% of
acrylonitrile in the distillate. The feed to the column
contains 95.2 mol % acrylonitrile, 0.1 mol % hydrogen
cyanide and 4.7 mol % water at a temperature and
pressure of 58 C and 1 bar, respectively.
Design a distillation column to recover 99% of methane
in the distillate and 98% ethylene in the bottoms. The
feed to the column contains 7 mol % methane, 56 mol
% ethylene and 37 mol % ethane at a temperature and
pressure of -160 C and 37 bar, respectively.
Design a distillation column to recover 98% of vinyl
acetate in the distillate. The feed to the column contains
20 mol% acetic acid, 20 mol% water, and 60 mol%
vinyl acetate at a temperature and pressure of 95 C and
2.4 bar, respectively.
Design a distillation column to recover 98% of water.
The feed to the column contains 4.5mol% ethanol,
86.3mol% methanol and 9.2%mol water at a
temperature and pressure of 60 C and 1 bar,
respectively.
Design a distillation column to recover 99% of
methanol in the distillate.
Feed: 6 mol % methanol, 30 mol % water and 64 mol%
acetic acid T: 100 C and P: 3 bar.

Design a distillation column to recover 95% of ethane

in the distillate.
Feed: 62mol% ethane, 19mol% propylene and 19mol%
n-pentane T: -5.0 C and P: 32 bar.

Design a distillation column to recover 99% acetic acid

in the distillate. The feed consists of acetic acid (97
mole %), propionic acid (2.0 mole %) and water (1
mole %). It is fed at a temperature of 155 oC and a
pressure of 3 bar.

Design a distillation column to recover 99% HCN in

the distillate. The feed consists of HCN (7 mole %),
acrylonitrile (89.0 mole %) and water (4 mole %). It is
fed at a temperature of 100 oC and a pressure of 1 bar.
