What is ISM

Independent Study Mentorship


An Advanced Academic course designed for students wishing to mentor
an adult professional in a chosen career.
This course is ideal for the self-motivated student with a passion for a
particular area of study.
Students in this course perform at a collegiate or professional level.

ISM Requirements

Document a minimum of 3 hours of mentorship activities each week.


Complete a journal entry each week documenting your mentorship
experience.

Complete an ISM Professional Portfolio.


Complete a Mid-Term Presentation.
Develop a final product and presentation at a collegiate or professional
level that is presented to a panel of graders.

Career of Study: Education

The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a


school or university.
Becoming a teacher is not easy, you have to love kids and
Have to earn a bachelors degree
Have to be certified or licensed in education
Have classroom experience beforehand.

Why is chose this topic

I chose this topic because I really enjoy helping students.


Every student is different, so it is important to learn how to handle a
classroom with multiple different personality.
I believe this topic will help me in the future in becoming a pediatrician,
when having to handle kids and take care of them.

Classroom Management

Classroom management is the process by which teachers and schools


create and maintain appropriate behavior of students in classroom settings.

History behind classroom management

In the early 1970s classroom management was seen as separate from


classroom instruction.
Classroom management involves maintaining the learning environment
through conscientious decision-making concerning students and
the classroom.

A classroom in which the teacher takes complete responsibility for guiding


students' actions constitutes a different learning environment than one in
which students are encouraged and taught to assume responsibility for their
own behaviors.

Strategies

Make sure all eyes on you.


Speak in a normal voice.
Use hand signals or other verbal communication.
Have an engaging lesson.
Be sure to address an issue between you and a student or between two
students as quickly as possible.
With younger students, try clapping your hands three times and teaching
the children to quickly clap back twice.
For students who chose to misbehave constantly, periodically review the
rules and procedures of the classroom until the students can successfully
adhere to them.

Reward System

Give rewards to students for being on there best behavior throughout the
week.
Rewards help students remember classroom rules and expectation.
Rewards can be a free homework pass, eat lunch in the teachers
classroom, pick a prize out of the prize jar, etc.

Product

For my product, I will be making a behavior contract, which will be signed


by the students and also a colored conduct chart.

Conclusion

I learned that it takes patients to teach a 1st grade classroom, and it also
requires a lot of skills
You also have to enjoy teaching in order to be a teacher.
Use different strategy method for different type of students.
Make sure to have a positive attitude because a teachers attitude reflects
on the students.
Avoid calling students out when they are in trouble, handle situations

privately.
