Question
Is using multiple FactoryTalk View SE applications within a single FactoryTalk directory supported in a production
environment?

Answer
FactoryTalk View SE Network Distributed:
Because of physical characteristics or product limitations, it may be necessary to split a single system into multiple
FactoryTalk View SE distributed applications. Due to security configuration and other products existing within the
system, it is often desirable to make use of a single FactoryTalk directory (FTD) for an entire system.
From a technical perspective, there is no limit to the number of FactoryTalk applications that can be hosted by a
single FTD. The best practice recommendation, however, is to host no more than one running, or
active, FactoryTalk View SE distributed application in a single FTD. Multiple applications under development may
be hosted within a single FTD, along with a single active application.
An active FactoryTalk Application is defined as an application that has:

Data Servers actively communicating with plant floor devices

HMI servers loaded
Clients actively communicating with any Servers
Hosting multiple active FactoryTalk View SE distributed applications in a single FTD can adversely impact the
resources of the FTD itself. Adverse effects include delays and/or timeouts when attempting to connect a client to a
server. Expanded topology testing, including hosting more than one active FactoryTalk application per FTD, is
currently underway.

FactoryTalk View SE Network Station:

While multiple active FactoryTalk View SE Network distributed applications are not supported in the same
FactoryTalk directory, this restriction does not apply to FactoryTalk View SE network station applications. Up to 20

active FactoryTalk View SE network station applications are supported in a single FactoryTalk directory.

Additional Information:
The FactoryTalk Services Platform (http://www.rockwellautomation.com/rockwellsoftware/factorytalk/index.html)*
(FTSP) is installed on one or more Microsoft Windows-based computers to create a FactoryTalk system. Click here
(http://www.rockwellautomation.com/rockwellsoftware/factorytalk/services.html) for a list of Rockwell Software
products that currently leverage the FactoryTalk Services Platform.

*The FactoryTalk Services Platform was formerly known as the FactoryTalk Application
Platform (FTAP).
In every FactoryTalk system, one computer must be designated as the FactoryTalk directory, and there are currently
two types of FactoryTalk directories:

1. A Local FactoryTalk directory is typically used in a single (standalone) computer system. The Local FTD may
or may not be connected to a Local Area Network (LAN).
2. A Network FactoryTalk directory is intended primarily for use with a multiple (distributed) computer system and
it is normally connected to a LAN. Any other computers in the FactoryTalk system are clients to the
designated Network FTD. Note: It is also possible to have a single computer system act as a Network FTD,
but this configuration is atypical.
For more information on the differences between a Local FactoryTalk directory and a Network FactoryTalk directory,
open the FactoryTalk Help ( All Programs -> Rockwell Software -> FactoryTalk Tools -> FactoryTalk
Help ) and select the topic ' What is a FactoryTalk System? ' from the Contents tab.
