Balaclava for loved Ones

by Galadriel

Size: Toddler
Needle: 2,5 mm
Yarn: Sport / 5 ply (12 wpi)
Gauge: App. 18 sts and 36 rows in 2x2 ribbing.
Read through the whole pattern before starting!
With circular needle cast on 104 sts, place marker and join into round. Next round: *knit 2
purl 2* around. Repeat this round until 2x2 ribbing measures app. 12 cm from cast on edge.
On next round knit 2, purl 2, knit 1, place marker, continue ribbing as established for 34 sts
after marker. Leave the next 24 sts on scrap yarn for face opening. (Change colour at this
point if you want another colour for the main part).
Turn work and start with the two establishing rows described below (one Wrong Side Row
and one Cable Row). Then work the Pattern repeat described. Watch out for increases and
decreases (written in gray), and read the notes at the bottom.

1st Establishing Row/Wrong Side Row (WS):

With wrong side of work facing you, slip the first st purlwise and knit in double seed sts (knit
over purled sts and purl over knit sts on WS) to the marker. Slip marker, p1, k2, p6, k2, p1,
place marker, finish the row in double seed sts.
2nd Establishing Row/Cable round (every 6th right side):
Turn work (right side of work facing), slip the first st purlwise, continue in double seed sts to
marker (knit over knit sts and purl over purled sts on RS), slip marker, slip 1 st purlwise, p2,
place 3 sts on cable needle and hold in front of work, k3 sts, then knit the sts from the cable
needle, p2, slip next st purlwise, slip marker, then finish the row in doube seed sts.
Pattern repeat:
1st round (regular WS):
Turn work and work the WS as described over. Remember to knit over purled sts and purl
over knit sts (except for between the markers).
2nd round (regular RS)
(3rd decrease on 9th repeat)
Slip first st purwise, continue in double seed sts to marker (knit over knit sts and purl over
purled sts on RS), slip marker, slip 1 st purlwise, p2, k6, p2, slip next st purlwise, slip marker,
then finish the row in doube sees sts.

5 round: Regular WS
(1st increase on 2nd repeat of 6th round)
6th round: Cable Row
(2nd increase on 4th repeat of 6th round)
(3rd increase on 6th repeat of 6th round)
(2nd decrease on 8th repeat of 6th round)
Repeat these 6 rounds for app 12 cm and increase 4 sts three times as described in gray,
then decrease 2 sts on every second needle as described 3 times in gray.
When you have finished both increasing and decreasing your work measures about 12 cm,
and you have reached the top of the hat. You are now ready to start the horizontal work (see
Top Notes below). On the first round after last decrease, devide the sts onto three needles
34 sts for each side and 18 sts for top (=second/middle needle). Cut yarn.

Top notes:
This part of the hat is worked with four needles, starting with the cable part.
Right side (RS):
With the right side of the work facing, slip the two last sts on the first/right needle onto the

needle in middle. Insert yarn and knit these two sts together and knit the remaining sts on the
second needle as established. SSK the two first sts on the third/left needle, and leave the
newly made st on the second needle. Turn work.
Wrong side (WS):
Knit/purl the 20 sts as established.
Continue these two rounds until there are no more sts left on the first and third needle
(except that you only move one st from the first and third needle, and knit that st together
with the remaining st from the first right side on the top). Remember the cable on every 6th
row.
When there are no more sts left on the sides, start picking up sts along the sides of the face
opening (app 28 sts on each side), and knit the sts from the scrap yarn. Be sure to make a
number of sts that can be divided with 4 for the ribbing. K2 P2 for 2-3 cm and cast off. Ive
used EZz sewn cast off, but I guess any other cast off will do.
Increase notes:
1st increase (on 3rd repeat of cable round/2nd repeat of 6th round): Knit as established to
marker. M1 before marker by picking up thread between needles and purl it through back
loop. Slip marker, slip 1 st purlwise and p1. M1 by picking up thread between needles and
purl it through back loop. P1, make cable, p1, M1 (the same way as before), p1, slip 1 st
purlwise, slip marker and M1 by picking up thread between needles and purl it through back
loop.
2nd increase (on 5th repeat of cable round/4th repeat of 6th round): Knit as established to
marker. M1 before marker by picking up thread between needles and knit it through back
loop. Slip marker, slip 1 st purlwise and p1. M1 by picking up thread between needles and
purl it through back loop. P1, make cable, p1, M1 (the same way as before), p1, slip 1 st
purlwise, slip marker and M1 by picking up thread between needles and knit it through back
loop.
3rd increase (on 7th repeat of cable round/6th repeat of 6th round): Same as for 2nd increase.
[Alternativly you can increase every 3rd cm 3 times.]
Decrease notes:
1st decrease (on 8th repeat of 4th round): Knit as established to two sts before first marker,
purl these two sts together, pass marker and knit the sts between the markers as
established. Pass marker and purl the next two sts together.
2nd decrease (on 8th repeat of 6th round): Knit as 1st decrease round.
3rd decrease (on 9th repeat of 2nd round): Knit the two sts before the first marker together.
SSK the two sts after the second marker.
