Part A (10 x 2 = 20 marks)
1. State Plancks distribution law.
2. Distinguish between Reflectivity & Tranmissivity.
3. What is radiosity (J)?
4. Define Wien's displacement law.
5. What is mean beam length in Gas Radiation?
6. State Ficks law of diffusion.
7. What are the factors considered in evaporation of water into air?
8. What is Counter diffusion?
9. Define Fourier number & Biot number for mass transfer.
10. Define the following: a) Mass concentration b) Molar concentration.
Part B (5 x 16 = 80 marks)
11. (a) Two parallel plates of size 1m X 1m are spaced 0.5m apart are located in a very large
room, the walls of which are maintained at a temperature of 270c.one plate is maintained at
9000c and the other at 4000c their emissivities are 0.2 and 0.5 respectively. If the plates
exchange heat between themselves and surroundings, find the neat heat transfer to each plate
and to the room. Consider only the plate surfaces facing each other.
Or
(b) Calculate the net radiant heat exchange per m2area for two large parallel plates at
temperature of 4270c and 270c respectively. (hot plate) = 0.9 and (cold plate) = 0.6.if a polished
aluminium shield is placed between them, find the percentage of reduction in the heat transfer
(shield) = 0.4.
12. (a) Emissivities of two large parallel plates maintained at 800 0c and 3000c are 03. And 0.5
respectively .find net radiant heat exchange per square metre for these plates find the
percentage reduction in heat transfer when a polished aluminium radiation shield of
emissivity 0.06 is placed between them. Also find the temperature of the shield.

(b). (i) What is meant by Absorptivity, Reflectivity and Tranmissivity?
(ii) Explain the concept of black body.
(iii) State Stefan Boltzmann law and Kirchhoffs law of radiation.
13. (a) Calculate the following for an industrial furnace in the form of a blackbody and
emitting radiation at 2500C:
(i) Monochromatic emissive power at 1.2m length.
(ii) Wavelength at which is the emission is max
(iii) Max emissive power
(iv) Total emissive power
(v) Total emissive power of the furnace if it is assumed as a real surface with emissivity
equal to 0.9.

Or
(b) (i) A vessel contains binary mixture of O 2 and N2 with partial pressures in the ratio
0.21 and 0.79 at 15C. The total pressure of the mixture is 1.1 bar. Calculate the following:
(1) Molar concentrations, (2) Mass densities, (3) Mass fractions and (4) Molar fractions of
each species.

(ii) Air at 1 atm and 25C containing small quantities of iodine, flows with a velocity of
6.2 m/s inside a 35 mm diameter tube. Calculate the mass transfer coefficient for iodine. The
thermo-physical properties of air are; = 15.5X 10-6 m2/s, D=0.82X10-5 m2/s.

14. (a) Helium diffuses through a plane membrane of 2mm thick.at the inner side the
concentration of helium is 0.02kg mole/m3.at the outer side the concentration of helium is
0.007 kg mole/m3.what is the diffusion flux of helium through the membrane. Assume
diffusion coefficient of helium with respect to plastic is 1x10-9 m2/s.
Or
(b) Gaseous hydrogen is stored in a rectangular container. The walls of the container area
of steel having 25mm thickness .at the inner surface of the container, the molar concentration
of hydrogen in the steel is 1.2 kg mole/m3 while at the outer surface of the container the
molar concentration is zero. Calculate the molar diffusion flux for hydrogen through the steel.
Take diffusion coefficient for hydrogen in steel is 0.24x10-12 m2/s.
15. (a)(i) Define the Schmidt ,Sherwood and Lewis numbers. What is the physical
significance of each?

(ii) Discuss the analogy between heat and mass transfer.

(b) (i) Dry air at 20C ( = 1.2 kg/m3, v = 15 x l0-6 m2/s, D = 4.2 x l0-5 m2/s) flows over a
flat plate of length 50 cm which is covered with a thin layer of water at a velocity of 1 m/s.
Estimate the local mass transfer coefficient at a distance of 10 cm from the leading edge and
the average mass transfer coefficient.

(ii) An open pan, 20 cm diameter and 8 cm deep contain water at 25C and are exposed
to dry atmospheric air. Estimate the diffusion coefficient of water in air, if the rate of
diffusion of water is 8.54X 10-4kg/h.

(b).(i) A pipe of diameter 30cm, carrying steam runs in a large room and is exposed to air
at a temperature of 250c.the surface temperature of the pipe is 3000c.calculate the loss of heat
to a surrounding per meter length of pipe due to thermal radiation. The emissivity of the pipe
surface is 0.8.what would be the loss of heat due to radiation of the pipe is enclosed in a
55cm diameter brick of emissivity 0.91.

(ii) Two equal and parallel discs of diameter 25 cm are separated by a distance of 50
cm. If the discs are maintained at 600C and 250C. Calculate the radiation heat exchange
between them.

15. (a) (i) The diffusivity of CCl4 in air is determined by observing the steady state
evaporation of CCl4 in a tube of 1 cm diameter exposed to air. The CCl4 liquid level is 10 cm
below the top level of the tube. The system is held at 25C and 1 bar pressure. The saturation
pressure of CCl4 at 25C is 14.76 kPa. If it is observed that the rate of evaporation of CCl 4 is
0.1 kg/hour determine the diffusivity of CC14 into air.

(ii) Dry air at 27C and 1 atm flows over a wet flat plate 50 cm long at a velocity of
50 m/s. Calculate the mass transfer co-efficient of water vapour in air at the end of the plate.
Take the diffusion coefficient of water vapour in air is DAB = 0.26 X 10-4 m2/s.
