PROBLEMS IN RADIOCARBON DATING OF BUH-DNISTER NEOLITHIC CULTURE
Nowadays, there are published 68 dates obtained by samples from the Buh-Dnister culture (BDC) sites. 51 of them are
certainly related with the Neolithic. At the same time , six dates obtained abroad correspond to the period from the 60 th to
the 47th c. BC corresponding to the regular synchronization of Buh-Dnister sites with the well-dated Balkan-Carpathian
Neolithic. 44 dates obtained in Kyiv Radiocarbon Laboratory since 1998 indicate the period of BDC from the 65 th to the
50 th c. BC. Their significant making older the BDC's beginning and contradiction with the data of its synchronization led
to the discussion. A discrepancy between the series of determinations was explained as mistakes in their archaeological
interpretation and as the errors in laboratory analysis.
Study of archaeological contexts from which the samples of <<new Kyiv dates of BDC come showed that none of them
is related to the assemblage. Most of dated sites are characterized by the absence of clear stratigraphic position of the
Neolithic materials, as well as by possible non-homogeneity of cultural layers. This fact allows the author to presume the
new alternative versions of interrelation between groups of finds discovered in the layers and between groups of finds and
dated bone samples. Eliminating the contradiction of corresponding new dates these versions contradict to the traditional
views on chain of various types of ceramic vessels usage.
The results of the direct dating of ceramics from Gard and Dobrianka 1 sites, as well as typological observations, confirm
at least partial synchronism of all known types of BDC pottery. This fact changes the traditional notions on division into
periods of the culture and its synchronization> and discordance with them was one of the reasons for mistrust of the <<new
determinations by Kyiv laboratory.
The scholars who related the contradictions between the old and new absolute chronology of BDC with the errors in
laboratory analysis were only partly right. Artificial making older of the <<new Kyiv dates of a series of the Copper Age sites
was confirmed in recent years. However, this fault is sporadic and non-systematic. This is evidenced by consistent results of
dating the Neolithic burial grounds in Nadpporizzhia and the Linear Pottery culture settlements. Consequently, it should
not be mechanically referred to all results of BDC dating starting from 1998.
