Abstract
In this work, we study the effect of radial loading on the beam mode vibration of circular cylindrical shells.
The study has been conducted for three different boundary conditions viz. pinned-pinned, pinned-free and
fixed-free. It has been observed that, the effect of external pressure on beam mode vibration of long
cylinder shows a behaviour that is in contrast with other modes with circumferential wave number n 2.
However, for short cylinders it shows similar trend as the other modes n 2. A critical length has been
computed for different geometric configurations (i.e., radius and thickness), for which the effect of the
external load is absent. Flgge-Lur-Byrne shell theory in conjunction with the appropriately obtained
averaged shell equations of motion (nonlinear Partial Differential Equations) have been used. All results
are verified with finite element analysis using ABAQUS.

1. Introduction
Cylindrical shells are used as pipes in offshore structures and oil industries; and they are typically very long.
Accordingly, the beam mode vibration (corresponding to circumferential wave number n = 2) becomes the
dominant mode and hence its study is very important. In off-shore conditions, these pipes are subjected to
different types of external loadings depending on its orientation. If the pipe is almost in the vertical direction, it is
subjected to a hydrostatic (linearly increasing) radial load while an almost horizontally oriented pipe experiences a
uniform radial load. These radial loads can change the vibration characteristics which can alter the onset of vortex
induced vibrations, and hence it is important to correctly obtain the effective vibration characteristics of the beam
mode vibrations of long cylindrical shells subject to radial loads which is the focus of this work.
In this work, we have investigated the variation of natural frequency corresponding to the beam mode (n=1) of
cylindrical shell subjected to external loads. Flgge-Lur-Byrne nonlinear shell theory has been used for the
present analysis. Very few studies have been found on beam mode vibration of circular cylindrical shells.
Forsberge [1] has studied the axisymmetric $(n=0)$ and beam-type $(n=1)$ vibrations of circular cylindrical
shells. He has used simplified models such as bar for axisymmetric mode and beam for beam mode vibrations.
Subsequently, Kornecki \cite{Kornecki1971}, in his note, analyzed beam type vibration of long cylinders using
Love's shell theory. He observed that if the length of the cylinder is sufficiently long then beam mode of vibration
of cylinders can be analyzed using elementary beam theory. Birman and Bert \cite{Birman1987} have presented a
study on nonlinear beam mode vibration of long cylindrical shell subjected to internal pressure and axial tension.
They have used the nonlinear relations between bending moment and curvature which depends on the internal
pressure to account for the variation in natural frequencies with changing internal pressure. Thus we observe that
most of the studies are done for sufficiently long cylinders using elementary beam theory for which the effect of the
radial loads on the frequencies cannot be reliably captured. The effect of radial loading (internal and radial) on
natural frequency for beam mode $(n=1)$ vibration of shells has not yet been investigated properly. The present

work attempts a rigorous study on beam mode vibration subjected to uniform and hydrostatic pressure (internal
and external both). Critical length of circular cylindrical shell has been obtained for which external loading has no
effect on the beam mode frequency
