BACKGROUND
This experiment was motivated by the writers curiosity about the growing and
development of mung beans. Its a fact that nutrients and conditions outside the Mung beans
affect the growth. Even though a seed of mung bean already have its own nutrient storage, it still
requires nutrients and another chemical needs from the outside environment such as water and
sunlight. In order to see how outside environment affects the growth of mung beans, Mr. Budhi
guided the writer to do an experiment about the influence of different types of liquid and
environment on the growth of the mung beans. By doing the experiment for one week, the writer
may see the progress of mung beans growth in different environment situation.
AIMS
The aim of this research and experiment is to know how environments such as light
intensity and type of liquid affect the growth of mung beans in one week and expanding the
writers knowledge about growth and development.
HYPOTHESIS
In the experiment the writer will be using three types of liquid and two kinds of
condition. The first type of liquid is tap water from Citraland, the second is coke and the third is
demineralized water. Then, the first condition is mung beans that are exposed to sunlight and the
second condition is mung beans that arent exposed to sunlight.
The writers hypothesis is mung beans that arent exposed to sunlight will grow better
than the mung beans that are exposed to sunlight, because seed doesnt require sunlight until it
grows leaves to do photosynthesis. By putting seeds from direct hot sunlight of Surabaya, the
seeds are able to keep themselves from heating and burns that might cause death to seeds.
Meanwhile, the seeds that are exposed to direct sunlight will still have its growth, but cant
maximized its growth because the hot temperature from sunlight which is up to 30 Celsius when
the sun rises high. Also the hot temperature will mostly like to evaporate the liquid that contains
nutrients that are needed by the mung beans in the cotton.
For the different types of liquid, there will be no significant impact to each seeds. All
types of liquid will make the seed grows. The reason is because the three types of liquid contains
water or H2O that is needed to stimulate the growth of seeds. Other content in the liquids such as
coke will not affect the seeds, because each seed of sprout already got its own nutrients that is
needed in growing from seed to sprout.
QUESTION
How do nutrients and conditions outside mung beans affect the growth and development?

MATERIALS
In this experiment the writer will be using:
-
4 Cardboards
30 mung beans
Tap water
Soda water
Demineralized water
30 plastic glass
Cotton
METHOD
The method the writer be using is experimenting and observing the growth of mung
beans each day. Mung beans are divided into two. The first one is the mung beans that are
exposed to sunlight, while the second one is the mung beans that are hidden from the sunlight.
After that, each group will be divided by three. The first one is the mung beans that will be
poured with tap water. The second one is the mung beans that will be poured with coke and the
third one is the mung beans that will be poured with demineralized water. Every day, the writer
will pour the tap water, coke, and demineralized water and measure the growth of mung beans by
measuring the length of root and stem from the seed in centimeters. Then the writer will keep
pouring three types of water and measuring the length for seven days. The data will be written in
a piece of paper.
After one week of experiment, the writer finally collected all the data that is needed. The
data are,
Tap Water
A.
Mung Beans
that are exposed to sunlight
As in this line graph, it shows that theres no growth from the mung beans seed that are
given tap water in 7 days. Some beans died before the experiment finished, while some seems to
be alive but cant grow any shoot. Every time the writer checked the cotton, the cotton always
came dry. Its suspected that the water was evaporated by the sunlight before the seed could take
the water for its growth. The sunlight also burned the seed for its high intensity of light and
temperature.
Soda Water
As in the line
graph shows that the mung beans seed that are given soda water were able to grow in 7 days.
Though, the growth wasnt significant and most of them stopped to grow in several days. Most
mung beans burned to dead by the hot sunlight of Surabaya.
Demineralized Water
As in the line
graph, it shows that mung beanss seed that are given demineralized water were able to grow. Yet
8
seeds didnt grow in a significant number. Most of the seeds died, because of the sunlight burned
it.
Tap Water
B.
Mung Beans
that arent exposed to sunlight
Meanwhile, the growth of mung beans that arent exposed to sunlight with tap water as the
liquid type were impressive. Though one seed cant grow, because it has been dead before the
experiment started.

This
graph
is
showing the mean of the last day of the experiment. It shows that mung beans that went without
sunlight and were watered with tap water grew better than any mung beans, while the worst
growth is the mung beans that exposed to sunlight and were watered with tap water.

In this table, it shows nine T-Tests with its P-Value in several conditions. The first one is
mung beans that are exposed to sunlight. The result shows that mung beans that are watered with
tap water and watered with soda water are statically significant. While the mung beans that are
watered with soda water and demineralized water arent statistically significant and the mung
beans that are watered with demineralized water and tap water are statistically significant.
The second result is mung beans that arent exposed to sunlight. The result shows that
mung beans that are watered with tap water and watered with soda water arent statistically
significant. Then the mung beans that are watered with soda water and watered with
demineralized water arent statistically significant. The last one which are mung beans that are
watered with demineralized water and tap water also arent statistically significant.
The third result is comparing between the mung beans that are exposed to sunlight with
the mung beans that arent exposed to sunlight in each liquid type that was being watered on.
Mung beans that are watered with tap water while exposed to sunlight and without sunlight
arent statically significant. Then, there are mung beans that are watered with soda water while
exposed to sunlight and without sunlight arent statically significant and the mung beans that are
watered with demineralized water while exposed to sunlight and without sunlight arent
statistically significant too.
LIMITATION
The limitation is the beans were unsorted. Some beans were bad in quality and unable to
grow even though it was treated well.
CONCLUSION
13
The conclusion is, my hypothesis was right. The result of the experiment shows that the
mung beans that grew without sunlight has a better growth than the mung beans that grew with
sunlight. Though, mung beans that is watered with soda water and grew without sunlight has a
bad growth. This result proved that one of my hypothesis about the mung beans that grow
without sunlight will have a better growth is right.
Unfortunately, most of the mung beans grew except the one that is watered with tap water
and grew with sunlight. This result proved that one of my hypothesis about the type of liquid
wont affect the mung beans is wrong. Thought there are so many factors that might affect the
beans. There might be possibility that the bad quality of seed affects the growth rather than the
type of liquid itself.
The influence of environment such as light intensity and type of liquids on mung beans
growth are vital, because water and other environmental factors are major determinant whether
the seed will live or not. Seeds are fragile and therefore they need a good condition of
environment to grow well. If the environment cant meet the condition, such as temperature, then
the seeds wont able to grow.
