net. William J. Morgan, a Physical Education instructor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, invented
volleyball (mintonette) in 1895. He combined the main features of tennis with a ball of the
basketball type. The name of this net game was derived from the word volley, a term used in
tennis meaning to hit the ball on fly. Indoor volleyball became an official sport of the Olympic
Games in 1964. More than150 nations belong to the International Volleyball Federation, an
organization that sponsors annual tournament.
