Title: Adding Adjectives

Type of Lesson: Guided Activity

Learning Goal: In this lesson, students will understand that adjectives are
an important element in a sentence that helps create an image for the
reader
Target TEK: 110.13.English Language Arts, Grade 2. 21(A). Students are
expected to: understand and use the following parts of speech in the context
of reading, writing, and speaking: (iii) Adjectives (e.g., descriptive old,
wonderful; a, an, the.)
Teacher Notes: Materials: Book: Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, Red
Circles for pepperoni adjectives, Anchor chart, Marker for Anchor chart
Engage: Teacher will engage the students by reading Pete the Cat: I Love
My White Shoes. This book is about Pete the Cate and his shoes. It has
different adjectives that describe his shoes and also helps create an image
for the students about his shoes and the different colors they change.
Explore: After reading the book, as a group we will revisit some of the
sentences in the book and see if we can point out the adjectives or
describing words in those sentences. Teacher may do a few examples to help
the students realize how describing works (adjectives) are important.
Explain: As a group, we will discuss what an adjective is. Adjective: a
describing word that describes the noun (person, place or thing). Teacher
may ask students what do you know about adjectives? or why do we use
adjectives? Students may reply with they describe a word or we use
them because they help make a sentence create a better image for the
reader. Together we will create an anchor chart. The anchor chart may
include the definition of an adjective /what an adjective does, and examples
of adjectives.
Elaborate: Now that students have a better understanding of adjectives, the
teacher will give students a topic (Pizza). As a group we will come up with
adjectives that describe our pizza. Each students will get a red dot
(pepperoni) and write an adjective on it that describes are pizza. Example
may be hot, cheesy, tasty, round, yummy, etc.

Name: __________________________________
Evaluate: Teacher will hand out a worksheet. That worksheet will have 3
sentences were students will place an adjective in the sentence. The 4th
sentence will be left blank so students can create their own sentence.
