Mathematics Course Communication Requirements Grades 1112

This document outlines the requirement for course communication for math courses taken
with the Independent Learning Centre. These requirements encourage students to develop
necessary skills to effectively communicate using technology. The expectations are different
for students in an E/C-level course, compared to an M/U-level course. Having standard
expectations enables teachers to provide detailed feedback to students. If students require
help with any concepts or requirements, please email teacher@tvo.org with your name, student
number, course code, and question number.

Solution Requirements
The primary difference between E/C and M/U courses is the requirement to use Equation
Editor. In E/C level courses it is strongly suggested, however in M/U courses it is mandatory.
Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be returned to students as incomplete.

Graphing Requirements
It is strongly recommended that students taking Grade 11 or 12 U/M courses use graphing
software (e.g., GeoGebra) to construct graphs. Hand-drawn or computer graphs must be
cropped in an image program (e.g., Paint, Microsoft Picture Viewer). Use the insert picture tool
to include all graphs into the Word Document. Only one file (solutions, graphs and diagrams)
can be submitted for marking, otherwise work will be returned as incomplete.
Hand-Drawn Graphs
Graphs must be clearly drawn on grid paper
using a sharp pencil and ruler
Both axes must be labelled and have
appropriate increments (evenly spaced,
sensible progression)
The proper domain must be used and the
graph should fill the grid (if one provided)
The x- and y-intercepts, asymptotes, and
key points should be clearly labelled (if
applicable)

For word problems, the graph requires an

overall title. Both axes need units, (e.g. d (m)
vs t (s))
If the graph is a straight line, use a ruler
If the graph is a curve, draw a smooth curve
and ensure it is the right shape (e.g., it does
not bend back on itself)

Graphs Using Technology

The x- and y-axes must be labelled with the

appropriate increments (increments should
be evenly spaced, the proper domain should
be used, and the graph should fill the space
provided)
The x- and y-intercepts and asymptotes
should be clearly labelled (if applicable)

For word problems, the graph should have

an overall title, as well as a title on the x- and
y-axes
Note that students are required to sketch
curves by hand in Lessons 810 of MCV4U.
Excel (or LibreOffice) is not a recommended
Graphing Software tool except where required
in MDM4U-C and in Unit 7 of MHF4U-C.
