TheErectorSpinaeMusclesworktogethertokeepthespineerectaswellasassistinbendingsidewardsmotionsandassistingtheextension
oftheNeckandfacetoturn

TheErectorSpinaemuscleactuallyconsistsofthreecolumnsofmuscles,theIliocostalis,Longissimus,andSpinalis,each
runningparalleloneitheroutersideoftheVertebraandextendingfromthelowerbackoftheskullallthewaydowntothe
Pelvis.TheErectorSpinaeprovidesresistancethatassistsinthecontrolactionofbendingforwardatthewaistaswellas
actingaspowerfulextensorstopromotethereturnofthebacktotheerectposition.Duringfullflexion(i.e.,whentouching
fingertipstofloor),theErectorSpinaeMusclesarerelaxedandstrainisborneentirelybyligamentsofback,howeveronthe
reversalofthemovement,theErectorSpinaeinconjunctionwiththeHamstringmusclesandGluteusMaximusmuscles
(buttocks)isprimarilyresponsiblefortheextensionoftheback(straightenthespine)aswellasmorespecificmovements
suchastheextensionoftheneckandsidewardsmovementofthehead.

ILIOCOSTALMUSCLES
ThefurthestfromtheVertebraofalltheErectorSpinaemusclestheIliocostalismuscleischieflyresponsiblewithassisting
extensionandlaterallyflexofthevertebralcolumn,maintainingerectpostureaswellasbendingthevertebralcolumntothe
sameside.TheIliocostalisMusclesoriginattachmentpointistheLumbosacralFascia,theinferior6ribs(thoracis)andribs
3to6(cervicis).Theinsertionattachmentpointsaretheanglesofribs7to12(lumborumandthoracis)transverse
processesofcervicalC6C4(cervicis).

Theoriginpointfromnarrowtendonsfromthelateralofthetopfouranditsinsertionpointsarefromthelateralofthe
cervicalvertebra2throughtill6.
3.TheThoracisMusclesassistsinthemotionofbackwardandsidewardsbending,keepingthespineerectandpulling
theribsdownwardtohelpwithbreathing.ItsoriginattachmentpointisfromtheLumbosacralFasciaanditstwo
insertionpointsarethetransverseprocessesofthe,andlaterallythelowernineortenribs,justwheretheybeginto
curveawayfromthespine.

insertionpointofattachmentisthespinousprocessoftheaxis.TheSpinalisCervicisMusclesworkcloselywiththe
SpinalisThoracismuscletoextendandlaterallyflexvertebralcolumnsuchaswhenyoutrytostandtalltoincrease
yourheightbyextendingthegapbetweenyour.
