Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published nine Sherlock Holmes books between 1887 and 1927.
Sherlock Holmes was, in essence, a hybrid between the Victorian gentleman, scientist and the police
detective, he has shown us the brilliance of his mind and extraordinary way of thinking. Holmes
needed to be flawed in certain ways, so the author made him something of a loner, with obsessive,
fanatical and addictive traits. As a plot devise it was useful for Conan Doyle to have Holmes assume
different guises where necessary, to provide inteligence so that segue between elements of the
inestigation could be made. The short stories are partly narrated by dr. John Watson, Sherlock's best
friend and companion, and by Sherlock himself. Stories tell us about adventures of fictional
characters.
The story is named 'The man with a twisted lip' and in like any other story our main characters
are Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective, and his friend dr. John Watson. While being hired to
investigate a mysterious life of Mr St Clair they are introduced with a life of beggars and homeless
people. Briefly, Watson, I am in the midst of a very remarkable inquiry, and I hoped to find a

clue in the incoherent ramblungs of these sots, as I have done before now. Mrs St Clair, the
lady who has hired them, urged them to find her husband declaring her belief that he is still
alive and that he will come back home. Sherlock tries to find every clue to fit the pieces of a
puzzle together. Seeing what the police have found about the missing person Sherlock slowely
begins to understand what is the real reason for Mr St Clairs missing.

Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant detective who has an amazing mind. Carefully revealing
all possible solutions, he finds not only the reason for crimes but also he reveales whole
background of characters.
Other perspective of an investigator is provided by dr. John Watson. He approaches to
the victimes from medical point of view, always trying to find a realistic solutions. He is a
valuable companion of this duo, by providing Sherlock a different point of view he often
gives hints that makes crimes easier to solve.
Family St Clair gives us a picture of a wife in a caring position towards her husband,
while Mr St Clair gives us a perspective of a man who works hard to provide a decent life to
his family and a respectful position in society.
This story brings us the problematic side of English society of that time. It tells us how
bad decisions in life can make us desperate and by lying we can fake our whole lives. Lies in
the end do not bring anything good to this family nor to any other family in different
situations.
The book describes how crime for money does not bring anything good. The main
problem is the society which places us in a position of choosing what kind of life we want, but
always giving us certain commands. It can be also reffered in our time because it describes
resoultion of a man regarding money and social status, and decisions of a lady who is trying
to bring back her family back together. While introducing us to the case we are unable to give
any kind of resolution, so Holmes provides us not only the ending of the crime but also the
main reason and all the circumstances.
A smart, witty and brilliant story gives us something to think about. It places us in a position of
being involved in the case and by seeing what is going on we also make our conclusions. It can be

read in one breath because it guides us and drags us down in its own little world. I would
reccommend it for everyone who are after the thrill and mind ramblings.
