Summarize- Acheson argues that while many civilians have died due to the
use of military drones, drones have many other important and peaceful uses.
This article is meant to inform the audience on the varying roles of UAVs so
that they make an informed opinion on the continued operation of the
technology.
Assess- Ben Acheson is a policy advisor at the European Parliament in
Brussels, Belgium. Being such Acheson is likely well aware of new policy
being created for UAVs. I would infer that he Understands the impacts of
restrictive policy on UAVs and their niche market.
Reflect- This article was helpful in defining some uses for UAVs. The article
argues against bans on UAV technology. This source should be used in my
research paper. It shows that UAVs spark ethical discussions and provides
new economic submarkets.
Avampato, Christa. Delivery Drones Are a Good Idea. The Impact of the Tech
Giants (2016): Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 24 Oct. 2016.
Summarize- This article gives information on the development of the drone
market as being a good thing. The author explains the benefits of fast drone
delivery and how it can open several new markets. The author even explains
in some detail how broad the delivery market could be from groceries, dinner
to packages ordered minutes before it arrived.
Assess- Christa Avampato is a writer and product developer in Washington
D.C. I feel that the author is a reliable source of information as she is familiar
with product development and the drone market is in its major development
stages now. This article argues in favor of the commercial use of drones in the
commercial market.
Reflect- This article will support sections of my paper that explain how useful
drones are to our current market and how they will create new jobs. This
article mixes in a lot of new and growing industries into the drone industry
showing just how flexible drones already are in the U.S. market.
Benjamin, Medea. The Dangerous Seduction of Drones. Drones (2016): Opposing
Viewpoints in Context. Web. 24 Oct. 2016.
Summary-The article talks about the dangers of militarized drones and the
drawbacks of the government using them. The author mentions a concept
that sticks out, drone attacks terrorize native populations increasing
resentment against the United States and growing the number of enemies to
fight.

Assess- Medea Benjamin is a human rights activist and a antiwar supporter.

She is biased against war and it is apparent in her article. The article is meant
to inform readers about the inherent drawbacks of weaponized drone usage. I
feel like this is a reliable source but I would need to dig into her research to
justify her statistics.
Reflect-This article would be good for supporting increased regulation of
drones. This would make a good counter argument to my article. I dont
necessarily agree with the author but I feel that her points are valid and
concise.
Brumley, James. Delivery Drones Are a Bad Idea. The Impact of the Tech Giants
(2016): Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 24 Oct. 2016.
Summarize- The article tears down the idea that drone delivery from
companies like Amazon are possible. The author takes a pessimistic approach
to drone delivery saying that there are too many problems for the technology
to work. There are public safety concerns, technology gaps and limited use
scenarios.
Assess- James Brumley is a writer and former stock broker. I believe that he is
a semi-reliable source of information. He doesnt seem to specialize in the
drone industry however he has kept up to date on it at the time of writing the
article. This article is an argument against the use of drones for delivery in
the commercial market.
Reflect- This article would be a good counter argument against any
arguments supporting the use of drones for industries such as drone delivery
and security. While the article focuses on the problems of drone delivery it
hits on the problems of drones that seem to plague the drone industry as a
whole.
Cusack, Dennis M. FAA Clears Drones for Takeoff. Forefront Sep. 2016: 6-7.

Summarize- This article informs readers that the FAA finalized a set of rules
for the operation of UAVs. This article covers some of the FAA rules as well as
insurance options for UAVs. The article laid out some characteristics of
modern UAV insurance and speculates on how the new policies will affect
insurance policies.
Assess- This source will be extremely helpful in giving examples of how UAVs
are changing the economy. This source focuses on the FAA policy and how it
affects UAV insurance. This source was written by Dennis Cusack who is a
partner and Chair of Farella Braun and Martels insurance recovery group.
This means Cusack is likely well informed in the world of insurance and the
source is likely reliable.

Reflect- This source was helpful. It will be a good fit in sections of my paper
that talk about economics or drone policy. This source has not changed my
view on the topic.
Hardy Quentin. Drones Ascend From Novelty to Economic Tool. New York Times
(2015): Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 10 Oct. 2016.
Summarize- The article explains how UAV markets tend to take off a little
better in rural areas vs urban because of the conditions of these
environments. Other markets for UAVs include sensor technologies and data
management.
Assess- Not much information was given about the author so I cant
determine how valid the source is. This could be a useful source without
information on the author it holds little validation.
Reflect- This source would be great in supporting economic discussions. It
shows that UAVs effect a much larger technology market and UAV
developments could have huge impacts on that market.
Hruby, Patrick. Weaponized Hobby Drones Are Inevitable. Drones (2016):
Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 24 Oct. 2016.
Summarize- This article informs readers about the realistic and dangerous
ways that commercially available drones can be weaponized. The author
interviews a video maker that weaponized his drone with a paintball gun. The
author goes on to explain how easily a real firearm could be modified to fit a
drone. Not only could the drone remotely fire the weapon but it could
potentially carry explosives and be built at a cheap cost.
Asses- The article was written by Patrick Hruby, a journalist, and fellow
member at the University of Texas as well as an adjunct professor at
Georgetown University. The source is likely reliable given the nature of his
background and his direct interview with the video maker. This article was
designed to be an informative argument for the safe use of commercial
drones and the importance of practical implementation of useful legislation.
Reflect- This article will be good for supporting arguments for strict drone
legislation. It brings up examples of weaponized drones, drone costs and
realistic commercial drone training time. This article will help support my
argument that drones have a place in society but laws need to be put in place
in a practical fashion. It also asks the question, How will laws stop criminals
from weaponizing drones when they are breaking the law anyways?
Iannotta, Ben. How Drones Are Used to Fight Terrorism Requires Public Debate.

Summary- The author brings up that there is much debate over the use of
UAVs in the war on terror. Many members of the public feel that UAVs are
being used carelessly, killing suspects and increasing the support for terrorist

organizations. This brings up the debate whether UAVs are the best answer
to terrorism.
Asses- Ben Iannotta is editor of C4ISR Journal. This means that he is likely well
informed with current military techniques and operations. His article seems to
argue in favor of questioning the military use of UAVs. While they have many
benefits they seem to be abused when left unchecked.
Reflect- This article will support the topic of controlling the governments
usage of military UAVs. It supports the idea that UAVs are useful and
important military tools but that they are misused currently.
Jacobsen, Mark. The Promise of Drones. Features. (2016): Opposing Viewpoints in
Context. Web. 10 Oct. 2016.
Summarize- The article talks about Mr. Jacobsens journey from flying C-17s
to developing a humanitarian aid drone to deliver cargo to remote locations
via UAV. He explains the challenges he met with not only the technology that
was still grossly to primitive but the social expectations or reservations as
well. Jacobsen believes that society still has a little bit of social change to
endure before flying UAVs will become an accepted practice.
Assess- Mark Jacobsen was a U.S. military pilot and a founder of the Syria
Airlift Project. He is well informed in the UAV market as he developed a drone
with his project. I trust his source information and feel that it will be valuable
to the research paper.
Reflect- This article will serve well in discussing the difficulties that the UAV
market faces when developing and marketing UAVs. The article also covers
the social difficulties that society places
on UAVs. Jacobsen failed to keep the project afloat partially because of the
social stigma around the word Syria.
Janik, Rachel, and Mitchell Armentrout. Commercial Drones Have Endless
Potential. Drones (2016): Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 24 Oct.
2016.
Summarize- This article sums up several ways that drones can be used. The
author gives information about drone use for wildlife monitoring, journalism,
and delivery. The article lightly touches on FAA regulation of commercial
drones. The author talked about how in many cases drones cost about 1/10 th
of what full sized aircraft cost, in a single hour of operation.
Assess- Rachel Janik and Mitchell Armentrout seem to be journalism students
at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
This means that they are likely using information from similar databases that
I used. I would imagine that their information is likely reliable. This article
servers to inform readers about the uses of drones in the current market.

Reflect- This article will be helpful for any economic arguments that I may
have for the use of drones. It will support and explain several Uses for the
technology. It brings up some slight privacy concerns from journalism use. It
also brings up important uses against unlawful hunting.

Lambrechts, Robert. The Drone Revolution. The Computer & Internet Lawyer 33
(2016): 1-9 Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 10 Oct. 2016
Summarize- Lambrechts defines some inherent problems with increased sales
of drones. The author mentions that drones will create a larger niche market
within the us market. A legal case was mentioned to help give some
backstory to the FAAs increased emphasis on the creation and
implementation of a UAV policy.
Asses- Robert Lambrechts is a partner at Lathrop & Gage LLP. He focuses on
environmental and intellectual law. He doesnt seem to specialize his practice
in UAVs. The objective seems to be strictly informative with little to no bias.
Reflect- This article will be valuable when giving information about drone
incidents, FAA regulation and UAV market value. This source will be helpful to
the research paper.
Mulrine, Anna. Drones Over America: Public Safety Benefit or creepy Privacy
Threat? Domestic Surveillance (2015): Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web.

Summarize- This article informs readers on the use of drones in law
enforcement. The article covers cost of UAVs, their law enforcement
applications, civilian concerns and some new state/community policies.
Assess- Mulrine is a staff reporter for the Christian Science Monitor
newspaper. The article seems to emphasize the importance of UAVs in the
world of law enforcement. I dont think the author is extremely biased but
maybe mildly.
Reflect- This article will be extremely useful in my paper. It argues for the
ethical use of drones by law enforcement as cheaper ways to help the public.
Prupis, Nadia. Law Enforcement Drones Spur Public Backlash. Drones (2016):

Summarize- This article argues against the militarization of police forces that
are interested in purchasing and operating drones. The author mentions that
it breaches our rights to privacy and could be weaponized against the public.
The author said that grants from the government for police departments to
militarize strengthens their bonds and the people need to stop it.

Asses- Nadia Prupis is a staff writer for a progressive news website. The
author is likely a reliable source however they seem to lack experience in the
drone field. They discredit a lot of uses for drones in the commercial market.
The article is meant to argue against the police use of drones.
Reflect- This article brings up some good points on the militarization of police
through drone usage. The content would support arguments against police
use of drones. Im not sure if Ill be able to use this article in my paper since I
am arguing for the use of drones by all legal and non-legal entities, it may
serve as a good counter argument to my argument.
Wolfgang, Ben. Drones as economic engines; Industry report predicts creation of
70,000 new jobs. The Washington Times (2013): Opposing Viewpoints in
Context. Web. 10 Oct. 2016.
Summarize- This article talked about the FAAs slow implementation of UAV
policy. It talked about the economic benefits UAVs would bring to the U.S.
This article seems to be strictly informative and not argumentative.
Assess- Ben Wolfgang seems to be and author for the Washington Times. This
means he is likely just reporting on information he has gathered recently and
has no likely studied UAVs for long. However, that was just at personal
assumption.
Reflect- This paper will support any economic arguments I create in my paper.
It also will support arguments that the FAA has been slow to react to the
development and implementation of UAVs.
