Macondo wellhead BOP still not secure, relief drilling to commence

USA GULF OF MEXICO: The US Coast Guard and BP confirmed that as of April 28, the
wellhead BOP on BP's Macondo well is not yet secured and the well continues to leak oil. BP
further confirmed that it had received Minerals Management Service's approval to drill the
relief wells and drilling is scheduled to commence on April 30 utilizing Transocean semi
Development Driller III. Drilling is expected to require 60 to 90 days of work. The well has
been leaking approximately 1,000 barrels of oil per day since Transocean semi Deepwater
Horizon sank on April 22. Meanwhile, the US Coast Guard approved a plan to conduct
on-location burns of the surface oil beginning on April 28. Workboats will consolidate oil
into a fire resistant boom approximately 500 feet long and then tow the oil to a remote
location. Upon arrival, the US Coast Guard will ignite small, controlled burns of several
gallons of oil lasting an hour a piece.
