The Life of an EMT

After completing training, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel undergo a

multitude of experiences that vary daily. Levels of education and requirements vary, depending
on the career path they choose. An EMT or Paramedic qualifies as an excellent job and they
must attend school for two years before taking the test to see if they become qualified.
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTS) will train in different areas(Riggs).

Emergency Medical Service provides emergency aid for people in need of help, also
called a rescue according to North Meck Rescue in Huntersville NC. The meaning of the word
rescue to North Meck Rescue workers and crew members told myself , I would stay that rescue
means the removal of individuals facing external, non medical, and non patient related peril to
areas of relative safety. The locations of the trucks can vary depending on locations, although
they are allowed to divide up by the location and proximity to a hospital. The EMS workers
remain the primary care for a patient when in transit to a Emergency Room (ER) and doctor.
EMT's do not have like normal a work shift or normal schedule like that, they normally work
really odd hours including, the weekends, holidays, and sometimes they even work twenty four

Lindstrom 3
to forty eight hours straight. They can choose to work for a main EMT service provider ,a
private provider, or a volunteer for many different rescues around our area.

A Emergency Medical Technician also known as a EMT, known as the lowest level of
emergency personnel. EMT workers provide in home care for people who can not go to the
hospital or just need minimal help. An EMT, the most common known type of Emergency
Medical Personnel, but also the lowest type of help. They can still help you, but not certified to
the extent of a Paramedic. An EMT can only get a salary of eighteen thousand dollars minimum
and twenty one thousand dollars as a maximum. When becoming the lower level of an EMT they
must know the following, Basic Life Support and know how to administer the CPR. They must
know how to give Advance life Support and make sure the choices being made not going to have
an outcome in negative manner in any way or hurt, harm the patient. (EMS Training)

A paramedics hold more training and better knowledge than an EMT. The hours for
education range anywhere 110 hours for a low level EMT, 400 hours for an Advanced EMT,
then all the way up to 4,000 hours for a Paramedic. Paramedic can administer medicine to a
patient. Pay roughly ranges from thirty one thousand dollars a year compared to a EMT at only
eighteen thousand dollars. One level above the Paramedics, known to the public as an Advanced
Paramedic. The difference between a Advanced Paramedic and a EMT consist of differences
such as Advanced Paramedics could considered a low level doctor, a truck much like a doctor's
office on wheels and allowed to anything that a doctor can, EMT's can not do things that a
Paramedic and Advanced Paramedic can do. Depending on the qualifications somethings they

Lindstrom 4
can not perform.

Training and Mentor work, a very important part when wanting to make sure that
someone thinking of the career can capable to come into the field and that they the education that
they got made sure that they were well educated for it. In addition to having 110 hours for a low
level EMT, 400 hours for an Advanced EMT, then all the way up to 4,000 hours for a Paramedic
you must still go through the training and suggested to get a mentor to learn and teach you and
help you learn the requirements needed. (Rocco V Morando Bldg)

Some classes and certifications needed consist of an hefty amount of work that they must do in
order to make the classes and different certificates that they need. They go to school and learn
different things, containing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), learn how to give oxygen,
help administer medicines to help the elderly, diabetics and people with different problems.
When finishing the course you must take two test following that courses provided, one tests
examines if you pass the class then you must take the test that the state will obtaine, this test will
determine if you your capable of working in the EMS world. To become and EMT you must
complete the physical and mental test. "Thomas Saulpaugh told me that highschool is needed and
the college is recommended because you need to learn the different things and skills that are
essential for following the protocol of the firefighter/EMT " (Saulpaugh)

When you call 911 you asked a few questions in order to figure out which emergency
personnel help that you will need, then asked location so they know the location that you need.

Lindstrom 5
When you call 911 they must found out of which medical assistance that you need they then ask
what condition you or the person receiving help may remain in. When the bell rings out it, it
means that you have called 911 and the operator will then assign a station or a provider with the
call. Once the EMS service has gotten the call then they will dispatch the right unit to come and
help you and allow you to placed in Emergency care. Once the EMS service has gotten the call
then they will come to your aid in a timely manner. You have something called The Golden
Hour for people who in a very critical situation and time may of the essence in making sure that
help will assist within the first hour of the call when they received it at the 911 center. Normally
the best time to provide aid or help for someone in need known as the "golden Hour. Normally
the term the "golden hour" has many different definitions but everyone will tell you something
similar.
When I interviewed the part time workers and the full time workers heres some of the
responses I got when I asked whats a normal day like at the station and running calls. BB stated
that a typical day will consist of training, cleaning and running calls. (Blackmon CLVFD
Co-captain)
Thomas Saulpaugh told me that this job isn't like a normal job, things will always change
and there will never be two days that are the same. (Saulpaugh)

During the off time, meaning not running calls the life at the station will consist of a
family fun time, most of the time you all joke around and laugh and have a good time.
Sometimes when workers need to act serious during the work day they will all become serious
but their always more than willing to welcome people who come in the stations but when it

Lindstrom 6
comes to their job they get serious and they will get it done.

When the bell rings out it, it means that you have called 911 and the operators calling the
station or the EMS. Once the EMS service has gotten the call then they will dispatch the right
field to come and help you and place you in Emergency care.

When you get into the field a good idea might consist of get different perspectives of the
job from retired and current employees. After talking to a few different people about the life and
different skills needed able to obtain the job, some of the input and advice that I got back while
asking my questions, When you first start listen and allow yourself to obtain all different
techniques, and skills that might help you.

When choosing which EMS caretaker provider you want to have a career path in a few
things that you could think about before choosing if it will the correct way to help people. You
have to make sure that your schedule fits in your time, you may not work Monday through
Friday but you many work Sunday at nine thirty to five o'clock on Tuesday, New Year's Day,
Christmas day. You never know when they might call you in or anything. Someone must remain
mentally and physically capable of doing different tasks at hand. When deciding which career
you would like pursue here were a few things to contemplate, do you have enough time
depending on other things you do, do you have devotion, and stability to help people, who
cannot care for himself. After looking at the options I think that some in the same time and place
as myself would say that they think, it would allow them to broaden their learning experience

Lindstrom 7
and open there eyes to new things.
